Grey Lady hitched a ride home with Jan when she was visitng ! How is she doing for you Jan ! She may need re-potting down the road. She's been in this pot forever and I just kept cutting stolon babies off to share with people. The three babies I cut off in order to have a Grey Lady from yours are doing super good !

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Heh Jan how is Grey Lady :))

Lindenhurst, NY

I love Grey Lady. It is beautiful, what do the blooms look like?

Elkins, AR(Zone 6b)

Absolutely beatiful! I love the chocolate soldier!!!!!!!!!!!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Grey Lady has deep orange/Red with yellow throat and red polka dots on the yellow throat. This plant went home with Jan when she visited ! I did keep a cutting of stolons. Well after moving two got too cold on the screen porch but on is great inside our home. !! Only takes one little stolon to make a big hanging basket full and plants to share !
chocolate soldier another awesome plant not easy to find either. Gave a friend a cute one the other day in bloom she could not believe it's beauty.
I had some big ones get too cold on porch these type of plants do not like cold. But I still have some growing that have been promised to peeps !
Their so much fun to grow ! and share !

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Beautiful, Allison!
I envy your ability to grow these so nicely.
I had a few nice ones before we moved into our current home, but they just don't like the available lighting we have now!

I was at a greenhouse the other day that had a couple of pots of a variegated episcia....I had tried them before and failed miserably so I resisted them!

Is Grey Lady as big as she looks? What size basket is it growing in?

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Oh Nan I wish I had those variegated ones ! It's really something I grow mine in natural light and not much light. I have a large E.F. Blue Heaven always blooming !
Yes Grey Lady really is big. She is in a 6 inch pot/ I had Jan ( Jannich ) take her home and I took a cutting !
Jan was surprised what little light she was growing in.
How is your Chirita S. Hiasko ( I can't spell) doing ? I do have some leaves down with mouse ears :)) It's my favorite Chirita and while moving Hubby knocked a couple leaves off I just had to save them :))

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Hi Allison!
The Chirita is doing *very* well...it's 'clustering'/pupping/growing babies or whatever the heck that's called in the gesneriad world, lol!!

I really need to pot it up, though, as it's very thirsty in that tight little pot.

If I go back to that nursery and they still have those (it was 6" pots with just 'basal' growth...no 'babies'/runners as of yet) and I have a few extra bucks (lol!) I might grab one ....I *almost* did get one that day, but had other things in my hands and had to make a choice....I knew that I'd kill that so I left it behind.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

No rush don't worry about potting up Chiritas will wait. They love small tight pots as they are use to growing in between mountain rock spaces. They love it dry and don't mind it cool to 40 dgrees. Mine even at 20 plus inches across and one leaf bigger and as long but wider than my arm half way up is still happy in a 5 inch azeala pot and was in 4 inch forever. They can take re-potting once a year but if you don't re-pot for 2-3 years they will be happy ! They even like don't even mind build ups in soil. Great beautiful plants to grow :))
Glad your's is doing well.
Mine has been living out on our screen porch the past month even when nights were 40 their happy one all in bloom too ! Their fun !

(Zone 1)

Glad I looked at this thread. I got 3 little Chirita's from Rob's Violets about a month ago and was wondering if I should re-pot them. They are still in the little pots they came in. I have been keeping them on the dry side and they seem to be doing okay. I also bought a little Streptocarpus .... was a bit disappointed when it arrived, a (same order as Chirita's) It came in a teeny dixie type plastic cup with one small leaf and another little leaf coming out. It doesn't seem to be doing so well. I placed them all in an east facing window all day, so they get bright light ... no direct sun. Can anyone tell me how fast these grow? Both the Chriita's and the Strep? I really want to try more if these do well and bloom for me .... they are such pretty plants. I want to try an episcia too , love the foliage on the Grey Lady and really love the look of Chocolate Soldier.... pretty blooms!

Oh, my! Your plant really has foliage that *big*!!??
You'll have to take a photo with a coin or soda can or something(or even your arm, for that matter!) nearby! I'd love to see it.

Mine is in a 3" (I think) clay pot, and I water it in it's saucer. It is doing really well, so maybe I should just leave it alone after all, at least for the time being.

It's in my south facing glass-block window (which is about the equivalent of an eastern exposure) and it does get quite cool there at night....so all those factors combined are probably why it's happy!

I thank you again for her...she's just lovely!

It will depend on which plants you bought. With Streptocarpus plants one leaf is considered a plantlet not like African violets they do not have crowns like African violets. They can have one leaf to bloom or a bunch of stubs . They like it cool and on the dry side and food to feed them best to use with high number in middle.Lot's of info about on Rob's and in Sticky second one.
Same with Chiritas though even the larg one's like small pots some of the mini growing one's will like even smaller
Both plants like dry and cool. Humidity is helpful too. I have always grown mine in natural light even when I had lights :))
Which plants did you buy ?

(Zone 1)

Violet_Treasure: I got: Chirita 'Silver Surfer' (it was substituted for 'Betty')
Chirita 'Stardust'
Chirita 'Vietnam'

And: Streptocarpus 'Cantebury Surprise' - This is the one that looks really puny, in a little tiny dixie type plastic cup .... just one leaf that isn't looking
too happy, but I'm hoping it will perk up soon!

It's been about 3 weeks since I got them ... I thought it was a month or more, but I just went back and checked the date I received them and it's only been 3 weeks, so maybe the Strep just needs a bit more 'adjusting' time!

Thanks for those links ... I'm going to look at them right now!

Allison,
Grey Lady is really pretty. I have a baby and yours gives me something to hope for. Chocolate Soldier's pretty as well. Don't have that one yet. Where do you get yours when the weather is warm enough?

Tami

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I've had them for years from trade cuttings. Only ones I have now are E.F. Blue Heaven, Choclate Soldier, Teddy Bear, Grey Lady . And Alsobia Cygnet :)) Alsobia Cygnet I bought small scragly plant about 3 years ago and sense shared well over 100 plus plants from it's many stolons it has given me. All the other plants I shared from stolons too.
When I get a new stolon I plant it in it's own pot making my plants thicker . bushy and healthy and then gives me plants to share :))

New Caney, TX

Violet,
I put my stolens in the pot with a rock over the end until they root and it keeps the plant real full. But they are running out of room and I have several pots of each now and babies rooted.
If you decide you want to trade some let me know. I would love a few of yours.

Tami

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I've never bought Epsica plants really just stolons or by trade. They root alone with-in 4-7 days and grow like weeds and cutting them off Mom takes stress off of Mom too.
I once let 35 plus babies on one of my Alsobia Cygnets and it really stressed Mom out. I was just too sick and had too many plants to take them off. But I did get them off and all into their own pots and they have all gone to new homes :))
I get stolons from my plants so foten so fast I could never keep them with Mom . I don't have a lot of room or health to take care of many , these plants are so easy so I like growing them !
I use to have some variegated ones and gave them all away wish I had kept a stolon of each so they are on my Spring wish list :))
