German Brugs in Florida

Geneva, FL(Zone 9b)

I was wondering if any one could help me here. A collector friend of mine got some German brugs from someone she knows--- who got them from a well-known German hybridizer a couple of years ago and is just now releasing them. However, I think not only did I get ripped-off, but also my friend and her friend as well. A few of the varieties are still too soon to tell, and they do have different foliage from one another-----but-------- these two here, man...... I am sorely disappointed and worried what the rest will look like. I am hoping it was an honest mistake, and am waiting to see how the other 5 varieties bloom before passing word back to the person who went through all the hassle to get them from Germany and wait two years

Anyway, one of them is called Angel's Moonlight, and is supposed to be a double flowering golden-orange to solid orange. The other is called Angel's Inspiration, and is supposed to be so dark pink it is almost red (also a double flower). Anyway, both plants are about 6 feet tall-- and this is what I a getting. I am posting 2 pics of each flower in the order I mentioned them above. I thought the heat and humiduty, if anything, would help intensify the colors. Is this normal for colors such as these are suppsed to be to do this:

I ahave never heard of those but I do not keep up with Euro brugs. They do not look too impressive. But................. first flowering can be a bit hinky. And double blooms first flowering I have noticed can even be more hinky. However, they do not look promising. Sometime s it can take a day or 2 for the bloom to color up also.

I sure hope they improve for you. Gosh waiting 2 years for for those, I think the disappointment would kill me.

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

I am thinking along the same lines. It sometimes takes a couple days to color up. Also weather and time makes some difference in blooms. I sure hope you are not disappointed.

I have not heard of either named brugs... Keep us posted.

Geneva, FL(Zone 9b)

They come from a German seller by the name of Anne Kirchner-Abel. She'e the lady with the infamous 'SuperSpot'--the one that is supposed to be tomato red.

My Pink Insignis is next to the one that's supposed to be pinkish-red and it is fully and beautifully colored, while the German one is not. The weather is hot and humid lately here in Central Florida.

In our area those flowers should have some color by now. If your friend ordered any whites maybe the tags got mixed up?

Where in Germany does Anne Kirchner-Abel live and in which zone?? Could be the difference in the zone makes the difference in the brug and, like others have said, maybe the first blooms aren't 100% and they will upgrade as the flushes progress. Good luck, you've certainly gone the extra mile and I hope it works out for you!!

Geneva, FL(Zone 9b)

She is in Duisburg, which is north of Cologne; not far from the Dutch border. These are the first flushes, so I am really hoping.........

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Anne Kirchner-Abel is a well known name, if they came straight from her, should be the correct ones. If they came to you through someone else, maybe not so great??

Best of luck!

Maybe your friend messed up the tags somehow. He/she would have seen flowers within that 2 year quarantine. They would already know if what they received and sent to you was wrongly id'd or not. I would question the person that quarantined and grew the brugs for two years before I would cast doubt on Anne.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Shoot, I cannot locate a zone map that will let me determine the zone without a zip. I do know that I'm in zone 8a and many of the truly beautiful brugs do not do well here because of the heat, and growers in some parts of FL experience similar problems. I surely hope it works out well for you. Thanks so much for your reply!!!

Angel's Moonlight & Angle's Inspiration are both on this page

I think Hibiscus hit the nail on the head. I hope it all works out for you!

Thanks ya'll. I will wait a bit longer. I hope the tags didn't get messed up because this person supposedly has a lot of good stuff and is very organized.

Anyone clicked on the link and checked out angels buzzer time? I dont know if its just the way the picture was taken or what but the flower looks to be as big as a dinenr plate!

Ncassleberry, one thing I discovered that might interest you is that both names you have that are in question were not introduced until 2005. I don't know that they were for sure not released before that but AKA shows them as new for 2005.

edited to add ...
Unfortunately if Anne didn't release these until 2005 there is no way the order could have been made, imported and quarantined for 2 years and your plants be 6 feet tall and in flower already. :(

Hey Veech

The person getting them originally got them in Germany and is German--so it could be possible they got them before the official website release (?) I go mine as 12 inch rather poorly rooted cuttings in early March, and these two I mentioned are 6 feet tall now. A couple of others are 3-4 feet tall, a couple are almost 5 feet tall, and these two are 6 feet tall (both grow to the top of my new 6 foot, wooden privacy fence, so that is a pretty good measure. After I put them in the ground and fertilized a few times, they went nuts. My pink insignis, white suaveloans, and Dr. Suess look like trees at about 10 feet (they are 2 years old). Anyway, here's for hoping on these.....

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

I remember when the first double pink came to the USA. A friend originally imported it. It didn't fit the time to be released, quarantine, blah blah either. I was scared to ask questions for fear of what I might learn lol!. Neither here nor there cause it never survived to be distributed anyway.
I hope everything works out for you and your new babies thrive. :)

Brookhaven, PA(Zone 6b)

That's just amazing. If I didn't know better, I would swear that that is the same seedling I had bloom for me this year. The fragrance on mine is WONDERFUL.

I bet you have better luck with your other 5! I will be hoping they all come out dark pink with lots of frilly skirts!!

Phil it really does resemble cassleberry's doesn't it? Very pretty flower! Congratulations on your new baby!

Yeh, it does----very odd indeed! LOL

And here's another :)
This is B. Species that has been available in the USA for years. It probably originated in Germany too lol!
