Heartworm medicine question.....

I was just looking at online heartworm medicine. I am needing refills for both Penny and Sammy and wondered why some places require a prescription and others do not. Do you all think it is safe to order this medicine online or should I just continue to get it at the vet as usual? Thanks for your ideas.
