Love to wake up to new blooms.....

Dublin, TX(Zone 8a)

This was waiting to greet me this morning as I walked out the back door (hot tea & newspaper in hand) and I couldn't resist sharing with everyone. It is a prolific bloomer ~ the tag on the trunk said "Hibiscus Cherie". It is the latest that I added to my collection.

Thank you so much for posting your picture. I bought a very dried out, stressed out, no label small hibiscus for $1 at K-Mart. This morning I was greeted with this bloom, which I believe is color distorted due to the pitiful condition of the plant. It looks much like your "Hibiscus Cherie" maybe the next bloom will be true.

Again, thanks for sharing.

dear Judy,
I got several of my hibiscus that way! I paid a little more than a dollar, but they had a whole bunch of hibiscus plants marked way down at my grocery store because their blooms had finished and they were just green plants. I got a ruffled pink and a yellow and a more flat petaled pink. They were a surprise, too, cause there were no tags to indicate what color they had been. I took a chance and it paid off!

I bought one this weekend like that. It was a poor tired plant; actually 3 rooted cuttings stuck in one small pot. There was one pale apricot bloom with a deep red throat and I think it might be Cherie or something pretty close.

Now I am trying to decide if I want to surgically separate the 3 plants before re-potting.

To me nothing is better than saving a poor, tired, stressed plant and giving it proper care and life! Seems like the reward is always worth the effort. Judy: your bloom looks a lot like my Cherie does and by next season it will have a deep apricot color and you will love it. Ardesia, I would attempt to separate the plant once it cools off just a bit (or at least I would need to here in Texas). Your weather may already be tolerable during the day, you don't want to cause the new plants any stress. Let us know how it turns out!

Belinda you were right about mine blooming true the next time. As a general rule, I like old fashion looking blooms of solid color, but this one sure makes me smile.

Judy, it was well worth the wait, huh? I have saved so many pitiful little plants from the nursery this time of the year and it is almost like they are saying "thank you" to us! I am glad that you are enjoying your Cherie, nothing quite like a big bloom that causes a big smile. Something that only gardeners can appreciate!
