They still look good Bob amazing beauty ! They do thrive on heat and humdity they love it !

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

well sweet Allison...you can see they are fading in color...i need to give them a shot or two...lol

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Yours are so nice and full! I have a couple of episcias that are fairly open & leggy in appearance... I keep looping the offshoots back around and tucking them down into the pot to root and fill things out a bit. I'm wondering... should I be using the same method that Allison uses to train an Alsobia Cygnet, cutting off the stolons to encourage the main plant to sucker & put up additional crowns?

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Yes it's best to cut them off. I trained Bob's like that and his were large before I sent them to him and full .
Bob they still look great but probaly could use trans-planting babies taken off and food. But if their blooming wow their happy !
If they get legging you can try to pot the deeper or cut crown off and re-root it.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

OK, I will work on trimming those stolons! I may just keep tucking them into the main pot... when it starts looking nice & full, then I will let some trailers hang over the edges!

Thanks, Allison!

Hi Bob!

They look wonderful to me! You are a good dad to your babies!

TFS!

Joanne

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

If you put on in a pot in the middle and cut babies off you will have a better plant. Best to put one crown of a trailer in a middle of a pot and it will branch out these do the same thing only faster and more natural.
Bob's large plants started with one tiny stolon in the middle of a pot. I took pictures of my Grey Lady in 6 inch pot full up and down and all around about 3 full feet from one tiny stolon in the midle of a pot. Now I need to trans-plant and take babies off. Will post picture tommorw.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I feel the same way Joanne :))

Roopville, GA(Zone 7b)

they are beautiful!

Your episcias will bloom faster if the excess stolens are trimmed off. Bob if you have too many of those stolens, pass them our way. I'm sure there would be some takers.

Denver, CO

Ahh, the old flowers versus more plants dilema!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

OK, I will start tucking those stolens into their own little pots!

That will give me some episcia starts to include in my fall trade boxes. :-)

Should I wait to trim them off until the leaf cluster at the end is a little bigger (say, dime sized), or will they still root & grow if they are tiny?

Thanks for your help!

Denver, CO

Size: up to you, but bigger is better.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

OK! I want the main plant to grow big & strong... but of course I can't resisit such an easy propagation opportunity! :-)

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

he he....well believe me...i haven't paid much attention to them....as "winter" approaches i'm sure i'll be more attentive 8))

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

JIll I let them get a good size before cutting off. much larger than dime size maybe 3x3 or so. Yes it's up to you but better survial rate. Can't SP.
OK for those want stolons from Bob HEHEhhee
he has Chocolate Soldier, Aussie Alice, Teddy Bear I think ?, Grey Lady, Alsobia Cygnet , he also has my
Chirita S. Hiasko can't SP it progates by leaf fast and easy !
Bob you can ship stolons just like a leaf ! But don't cut them off until mailing or root them in their own pot and send the plants. Believe me I bet you have a lot of them ! Was Chocolate Soldier in a Pan Pot when I sent it to you ? I know they were all good size plants. And they are still breath taking you sure can grow them ! Oh your Begonia will grow large too. Just put it in a large Pot. Mom plant was and is in a 12 inch pots three times. I kept growing them and shared many. There is one outside in the garden now twice the size of the 12 inch pot :))
Fun growing !

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Bob I bet your Stolons are as big bigger than most plants. lol Cut one off for the hek of it and take a picture and show us :)) Then fill a pot with soil-less mix. to the toppers over. Cut stem so when you oplace it into the pot you can push the stolon all the way flat into the soil. Water real good . Keep it right there with others anywhere with some light and hot/humidity . Keep evenly moist within a week it will be rooted and growing like a jungle !

Roopville, GA(Zone 7b)

i have just gotten into these thanks to allison and ki. i think i have 6 different ones. when mine start to get big and need trimming i will sure share. if anyone trims and has extra of grey lady or chocolate soldier i am looking for those and would love love love a piece : )

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Kelly
You don't want to trim them but they will shoot out babies/stolons like spider plants do the stolons root within days to week and grow into a baby real fast.
I am getting rid of all my plants just about all have SOLD . Dmail me please I have Chocolate Soldier and grey lady still extra.

Roopville, GA(Zone 7b)

allison the alsobia cygnet you sent has babies on stolons already! and aussie alice and blue heaven are growing like crazy. i have aussie alice and blue heaven in my bathroom window. they love the humidity and we don't have central air and i keep the bathroom door shut so it gets hotter than the rest of the house. we have air units to keep rest of house cool thank goodness. i am sort of glad the bathroom isn't a/c so they are happy there : ) i will dmail you for sure! let me see if i can get some pictures of the plants you sent first.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I took pictures of a few of my Chocolate soldiers leaf and grey lady and couple others the other day. Will get them out of the camera later ! I know your plants are very happy in there. I have some tiny growing Begonias on my kitchen windowshelf and they love it there. Water always running and boiling :))

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Hi everyone...well allison they don't have a lot of stolons...they seem to be reaching towards the light....again...it may be that i haven't fertilized enough etc..however i'll ck closer as they may well be hiding....8))...they're in the same pots you sent them in allison..white pots

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

I find that medium size stolons are the easiest to propagate, but I don't think I've ever lost one - and I've started them from 1/2 leafspan size.

I know I posted this before somewhere, but since I can't find it, here are some pictures of how I trim mine for propagation: http://growtheworld.blogspot.com/2006/07/propagating-episcias-from-cuttings.html

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

The stolons grow so fast here in this heat and humdity ,,k=like the 35 o=plus I took off an Alsobia Cygnet apeared in less than a month.
I just fill porper size pot, cup...with soil-less mix flowing over the top. Cut stem so when I place it into the middle of cup , I push it down into the middle of the soil, water good sit on my stand that get natural light within 2-7 days it is rooted and growing ! Keep evenly moist.
I made a thread on this with Pink pather I think I took 3 or 4 stolons off of her Mom went into pan pot and I did pictures and step by step if I can find it later.
