what is a "Kirby" cucumber?

Southern Mountains, GA(Zone 6b)

I'v seen it mentioned in several recipes but I've never heard of it or seen that variety listed in any seed catalog.

Apparently the food service people used niche categories . American , English, Japanese, Armenian, Kirby. Don't ask me how the name got started , but it is apparently what most of us call a pickling type cucumber.

Thanks Dill. It's what I would call a pickling cucumber.

Haven't heard the term in years...but that's what I'd call one too.

Question--- What's a good variety of burpless / English type cucumber
like we get shrink-wrapped in plastic in the supermarket?? Any recommendations?? Love'em with onions in a vinegar & sugar solution.

Larry-I'm growing Chelsea Prize. Got the seeds from:

https://www.reneesgarden.com/seeds/seeds-hm/vegCh.htm#cuc

They're really good cukes. Crisp and much better home grown than what you get at the market.

It would probably cost as much for a packet of seeds as to buy one cuke!

I have had really good luck with Amira cukes from Johnny's Selected seeds. It is listed as a middle eastern cucumber and grows long and has a wonderful mild flavor and very prolific.

I just peel my picklers...don't plant the other type...I think the picklers taste 'cukier'.

edited to correct grammar...

Thanks goodness!!!!! I HOPE it can STILL be called ""Thunder & Light'nin"". LOVE that name!!!!!!!!!!! SO...down home......

Kinda like th' "cathead" biscuits grandma "usta" make when I waz a kid......... really graphic and to the point!! NO pretense.... My Uncles he ""put them to sleep"" , as they called it, by slippin' a nub of home-churned butter between th' fluffy layers.... oh....the memories...... Then, after breakfast, they'd all go to th' field to work in their bib-overalls....
