I just realized today that one branch on my purslane has variegared leaves. The leaves are white with green markings and very pretty. Is this common? I've never seen it and am wondering if I keep the seeds from this they'll come back variegared. Any info?
Variegated Purslane
I dunno anything about the varigation but that's really pretty.
I've only seen the yellow kind.
Crow I have lots and lots of Purslane in many different colors but none have variagated leaves. Wish some did. Maybe it's a mutation thing.
Two yrs. ago my Mother had a double purslane that was so pretty. It didn't come back the next spring and I was so disappointed as I wanted to get some cuttings. I've never been able to find it at any online nurseries. In our area purslane is almost considered invasive. But I like it and just let it continue to bloom. By August that may be all I have blooming. ;)

I know what you mean. It's sometimes considered a "weed" here too. If only al weeds looked this good and were this tough, we'd have it made! I'm going to save seed from the variegated bit and see if they'll be variegared. I may also try to root some cuttings. I'll let you know how it works out.
You should have an easy time of rooting cuttings from Purslane. If any stems from my plants happen to fall on the ground they just root right there. ;) Such an easy plant. Grows in hot sand here.
Be sure to taste it! Some ornamentals are bitter-yuck, but lots are delicious, some taste a bit like lettuce, some have a lemony snap to them, and others have a touch of green pepper flavor. All of them are the highest non-animal source of omega 3 fatty acids. Yes, purslane is a brain food!
If you like a variety, save the seeds. Tiny little black seeds in the older green to drying out pods. They can be easily propagated after it gets hot again next year. You can take off a 3" or so branch and stick it half way into the ground to propagate it as well. Take a few inside when it gets cold, they do well under a grow light. When you harvest purslane leave about an inch or so to regrow. Purslane grows back in a couple of weeks or less.
