What a beauty...

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

This is my 'Yesterday's Sapphire Trail" CritterO & Nannanavaro graciously purchased for me last year on a shopping spree... I love it. It isn't trailing but I just can't seem to pinch out that center to help it along...sometimes ya just gotta let them do their own thing..:)

Do ya like it????

Enjoy,
MsC

MsC that is gorgeous. I have a trailer, First Robin, that doesn't trail much either.

Very beautiful.

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Oh MsC I love it ! Beautiful. Even if you just take one leaf off the crown it will start trailing ! Then you'll have more of those stunning flowers :))

Grand Forks, BC(Zone 5b)

Gorgeous, MsC. Congrats!

What a beauty!!!

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

MsC, what's not to like? The color is wow! I love it.

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

Is it really that color? If it is it is simply beautiful.

Abilene, TX

It really is beautiful. : ) Pam

Oh, thanks for bringing this to my attention!! Wow, that's just stunning! 'Yesterday's Sapphire Trail' is the one that was so small when I picked it up that she gave it to me for half price... so I couldn't snitch a leaf before sending it along. If you do take the leaf off near the crown, I hope you will put it down -- I want dibs on a plantlet! :-)

I did put down a leaf from 'Yesterday's Valentine' before sending it along, and now I'm propagating from that plant to share! Here's a recent photo that doesn't really do justice to the intense violet-blue of the blooms.

The other plant that I sent along to MsC from that expedition was 'Tiger Trail'. I snitched a little sucker from that one, and look how it's grown! I love the extra-velvety leaves on this one, and those lavender blooms look like little roses.

Like most of my trailers, these have multiple crowns but haven't really started "trailing" over the edge of their pots, in part because I've been gradually moving them up to 4 inch pots rather than letting them trail out of a 2 inch pot.

Mrs.C, what a pretty plant!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I really love the foliage on the 'Yesterday's' series... I have a little 'Yesterday's Child' plantlet that seems similar also.

You can really see the veining in this picture of the 'Yesterday's Valentine' plant that I sent to MsC.

Don't fprget there are two types of trailers.
There are two types of trailers avaiabl...trailers and semi-trailers . Trailers havee branches that enlongate and eventually droop over the edges of their container in a hanging manner. Semi-trailers grow sideways instead of down. Both types can be treated culturally in the same manner,
Both types are correct and both types get the same points in juding at a show.

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

I thought you'd all like it.:) It's of course a favorite & is getting pretty large so I may just give it a love pinch & see what it does.

It's true color is a little more royal purple...more purple than blue.
Digital Cameras always seem to enhance/change the colors just slightly.
Something to remember when buying a plant by just a photo.

My 'Yesterday's Child' plant is doing great also & so is Tiger Trail...
CritterO when I pinch that baby I will gladly share it with you.

Glad ya'll enjoyed the pic!

LOL at the idea of giving our plants "a love pinch."

I swear, purple is the hardest color for my camera to capture correctly... and even if I try to fiddle the color balance in the photo editor, I can rarely get the true color... Somebody posted a link to a good explanation of this; I will have to hunt that up. It's another reason why it's almost impossible to ID a plant by trying to match up photos.

I'm glad your other 2 plants from VG are doing well also!

Allison, I've never seen a plant described as "semi-trailing," but I know you've read a lot more about them than I have. In FC, they seem to be either classified as trailers or not. That makes it hard to figure out what a plant's habit will be. Also, as Rob has said, you can grow a trailer outward as a ground cover by potting into increasingly wide (but still shallow!) pots, or you can let them trail. Some of them look really odd while they're filling in, too!

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Allison is right about the different types of trailers but most of the semi trailers are of the older type for the most part & it's from their breeding.
They tend to sloooowly creep as opposed to trail.
our newer varieties seem to really trail.

I have wondered if this particular plant was "mislabeled" because it hasn't even offered to sucker much less trail..lol
I will bite my lip & give it a 'lil lovin pinch ' and report on how it does.
I do know the info CritterO shared about doing a crown cutting really improved some of my others, plus it gave me more plants too.

I've grown a few of the ; Yesterday's Child (8908) 11/24/2000 (Jeff Smith) Double dark blue pansy. Medium green, ovate, quilted. Standard trailer
back couple years and don't recall back how it grew as I grew it by leaf and gave it away. FC picture looks a little " Not as pretty as yours MsC"
I've never seen the 'Yesterday's Sapphire Trail" must be a newer one or one that has not made it in FC.??
Your's does not even look like a trailer.
Do you think.? I have trailers that grow Semi-trailers grow sideways instead of down. But they don't look like Jill's trail of Tiger Trail (6897) 07/13/1988 (P. Harris) Double bright fuchsia/pale pink back. Variegated, quilted, glossy. Standard trailer
Now I have Tiger Trail from Jill and mine trailers but I have taken lots of leaves off of it to share and I have also fount it like low light in order to help it trail.
MsC your plant is so gorgous you can try to make it trail if you want, maybe it does not want to be a trailer lol
bacause WOW it is super beautiful flowers and foliage !

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

'Yesterday's Sapphire Trail' isn't registered in FC, so I googled... I found only one photo of it, showing the foliage but not showing blooms, but MsC's plant does look like a good match. http://www.laeom.com/africanvioletssmith%20hybrids.htm

My 'Yesterday's Valentine' was also slow to get multiple crowns, and I had to encourage giving the center a loving pinch. :-)

edited to add that 'YST' is a Jeff Smith hybrid released in 2000 according to the link abovce.

And the information about it is it is a trailer I understand and know this. I am just saying to me MsC's does not look like it want's be a trailer. Can't you hear it. lol :))

Joanne
Are you thinking about me lol
I've been packing a box of your's hope to get two out even. But I fell asleep and just woke up. I'm back a working almost done with the first one. lol I have been working on packages sense 7 AM and on my second box. Sooo frustrating wish I was stronger ..but they will all get there to their new Mom's and Dad's !

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Allison, I wasn't responding to your comments about whether or not it wanted to be a trailer... In fact, I didn't see your post until I had posted mine. When I read your comment about it maybe being a newer one, I added that info I'd found about the hybridizer & the date.

MsC was wondering if her plant might be mislabeled, but I think the photo I found showing the foliage looks like her plant, so I think hers is indeed 'Yesterday's Sapphire Trail'.

I know sometimes we get a couple of different "conversations" going on in the same thread!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

That's cool I must of been looking at the wrong picture my ol eyes it was dark for me I could not see it good.

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Allison,you said.....
"I am just saying to me MsC's does not look like it want's be a trailer. Can't you hear it. lol :))"

Yes... I can hear it & I ask it and it said " Excuse me ~but I'm BLOOMING!! ~ Ya want me to bloom or trail? I can't do both" Silly human's...:)
Hahaha!
Anyway, It is a beautiful plant and the leaves are interesting. They are hairy and oval but I don't see much red backing at the moment. I do love this hybridizers plants & I just love it trailing or not.

I do wish he could show a bigger pic with some booms on the website.:)

Thanks for enjoying my pics everyone!

I know how can it perform both trailing with those stunning outstanding flowers that take over and blind you with's their beauty. The foliage looks so prefect too.
VG has the bloom picture yes it's pretty but your flowers are out of this World !
I 've been packing plants slowly and each plant I examine it's beauty and uniqueness and last plant the leaves felt so soft like suede :)) These plants are amazing.

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Yes Allison, these plants are one of the most amazing plants to grow...so many different ones & all just as beautiful.

One of my favorites for the leaf structure is Yesterday's Valentine trail.. I love those dark red lines coming through the leaf when the light hits it...the blooms ain't bad either.:)

or the fuzzy wuzzy leaves, they just call out to be stroked.:)

God really out did himself the day he create the African Violet! He must have said " those humans are really gonna like this plant" :)
Such Joy!

MsC

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

"those humans are really gonna like this plant"

Yes!

... and then they are going to play with it, and hybridize it, and propagate it, and spread it all over in such remarkable variety of form & color!

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

And I wonder if God knew how addicting they'd be???
Maybe it's a natural thing..lol
