Bulbs thread - feedback, please!

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

We tried this out first with the tomato folks, and they gave us good feedback, so I thought we'd try it in some other forums, too.

Here's a link to the sticky thread, in case you missed it: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/627877/

Same questions I asked for the other resource threads...

1) Is it helpful (i.e., did you learn about a resource you didn't know existed, or how to better use one of the resources it described?)

2) How could it be more helpful?

3) Would you prefer to see this type of thread remain as a "sticky" thread, or linked to a separate page within the description at the top of the forum? (Were you aware of the text at the top of this or other forums? It's a fair question - don't be afraid to say you never read them ;o)

4) Other feedback for us?

Great idea!

Let's make it a sticky on the top of the thread list.

Your examples are very good. (I finally learned how to use the 'cultivar' finder in Plant Scout.)

I liked the reference to the DG Classified Ads. --First time I have seen them and I noticed 'Bulbmeister' had her list up. Great!

We have to find some really great threads about FAQ re: bulb 'culture', etc. for a second sticky.

Thanks, Terry, for setting these up on the forums. Really puts the information right at hand.

p.s. and, Terry, don't you think it would be nice to have a Photo space on the left of the thread headline on the list of topics?

You're not getting a whole lot of feedback. I was waiting to jump on a bandwagon of sorts, but maybe there isn't one.

I'm not fond of sticky threads myself. There comes a point when there's rarely anything new on them, and I get annoyed when the top thread isn't something new on the forums I regularly frequent. But then, perhaps I'm annoyed too easily. :-)

I do like the idea of making a link at the top of the page however. After being on DG a year I think I've figured most things out, but it would have been nice to have that valuable info readily available.

So that's my answer. I like the page of info offered, but I don't like the sticky thread idea. I may be the only rider on this bandwagon though. Maybe with this thread bumped up, we'll see more feedback.

It seems that this is just a collection of the information and instructions already in those respective DG parts- PF, GWD, Plantscout, etc.

Stickies seem to become necessary as a hamper for those "Help me ID a plant that can't be." Forum-specific Frequently-asked-questions.

Bottom line, with McGlory: The bulb sticky doesn't seem useful. This forum doesn't seem to have major FAQs.

-and those picture thumbnails in other forums would be nice here, too. Why are they in some forums and not others? (asterisks instead?)

I don't know...I always find FAQ threads most helpful especially to newbies to DG or newbies to the thread topic....Nice concise information.

Threads with especially good info or special 'write ups' on topics (a la the African Violet forum) filed in a Sticky would help those who have basic questions find answers quickly and eliminate many redundant questions/threads. I would like that too.

Some examples of Bulb FAQs and Answers can be found on these links--

http://www.bulbsociety.org/

http://www.urbanext.uiuc.edu/bulbs/qa.html

http://daffodilusa.org/daffodils/faq.html

I guess I don't expect the reference stickies to have new information from forum to forum, but they are a nice introduction to DG for those surfing the net looking for information on a garden topic. And then maybe the surfer will stay and become a subscriber. (-:

I like the stickies, but I'd prefer them as a link at the top of the forum. I forget from year to year some of the things I know and it would be helpful to have it at hand. But I do agree with McGlory about not having new topics at the top of the forum.

I also like the FAQ idea. I wish every forum had one.

I think the Sticky could be very useful, although I don't as a rule use them I think newcomers (there are plenty of newcomers) will find it helpful. It does take some time to find your way around, and many people never find all the features.

Having a readily available list of cultivars takes some work out of searching, and I should learn to look at it.

Recommended books could be useful for those wanting to buy.

For those looking for a supplier it is very helpful. Some of us already have our favourite suppliers, but there are many people new to gardening or to mail order.

A lot of thought has been put into the Sticky, thanks for the hard work!
