Tricks to get brugs to bloom?

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

Hi everyone,
I haven't posted here before, and I'm sure this topic has been covered more than once, but I don't see it during a quick glance through the first few pages of the forum . ..

Can you tell me what to do if a brug isn't blooming OR what would cause them to not bloom (or direct me to the thread that already answers that question)?

thanks for your help and patience!!

Welcome Onalee to the Brug Forum! From the response, I guess not too many people know what the tricks are! LOL

I have one I have been waiting on 2 years. I am about to toss it just because the genes are evidently flawed. Brugs are sure too ugly to grow for their foliage only.

I can only tell you what I have noticed in growing them. Ones I have in too much shade, bloom much less. They like to be well fed but I have had ones in neglected 1 gallon pots that look just so needy bloom for me, though not well.

Messenger is the only thing that I THINK may cause them to Y faster and bloom.

Which brings me to the question, have your reluctant babies Yed yet? A picture of them would help a lot.

Hi, I planted a brug seed and it took 2 years to bloom. I feed mine 2 times a week during the growing season and supply lots of water. Do you know what kinds of Brugs you have? I have a Maya that bloomed in the basement in February. Sometimes it takes all summer but usually by Sept. I have blooms. You are both in zone 9, Onalee, how old are your brugs? Kell, what is Messenger?

Thanks for the link. I had been wanting to try Messenger to see if it lives up to its reputation.

Alright, after reading many posts (good and bad) about Messenger, I broke down and bought some for my roses. I just got it in the mail today, and sprayed just about everything. I only sprayed 1/2 of my Isabella, though. Isabella currently has 4 "big" buds on her. Don't ask me why I only sprayed 1/2 of her, I'm just crazy that way, I guess.

I have 4 little brugs - 2 that have buds (Whiskers & Enchanted Double White), the other two don't have "Y's" yet.

My Double Purple Daturas are already growing like weeds, so I only sprayed the "small" ones to see what happens.

I'm also experimenting with my morning glories. I sprayed 1/2 and left the other half alone.

I made sure to take "before" pictures, and if ya'll are interested, I'll post "after" pictures in a week or so.

Hope like heck I don't get "mutant" blooms and that my roses recover. :)

Sure Felicia, I would love to hear what you see from using Messenger!

I just wanted to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY Onalee! I hope you have a great day! Your brugs sure should have bloomed for you today. For shame on them.

Well, I have come to the conclusion that they need humidity. All of you in the humid south and on the coast near the water do well with the brugs. Mine grow real good but don't bloom. Their leaves are very nice, real pretty. They don't Y until late August and into September and by then it is starting to get cold here. I am going to get some shade for them since it is suppose to be 102 on Saturday. Very unusual for here. And, with no humididty I don't think the brugs can stand that.

They wilt down when the sun hits them and perk up again when it leaves. They are a real mystery to me.

Thanks WillowWasp. And a day late-- Belated Birthday Wishes to Onalee, hope you had a great day. Not sure about the humidity thing Jnette... I know the sanguineas's(sp?) don't like it.... I think if you can keep some of the height alive during winter, at least cut above the 1st Y when you bring them in, in the Fall, they get a "jump" on blooming in Spring cause they don't have to grow and "re" Y. At least that's my experience this year. -
A question, I'm new to DG, how can I post a pic? (thanks)-AuntB

Hi
Thanks for all your help and birthday wishes. The ones I have are large brugs, grown from seed 3 years ago that I got from Larry Smith. There are several different varieities. All of them bloomed the first year from seed and they bloomed well last year, in fact they all had tons of blooms coming on them when we got our first freeze last year and they got killed back. It sounds like maybe I need to fertlize them more - I have thrown them some ferlitzler here and there, but no concentrated effort. I have some in sun, some in shade, the ones in sun have bloomed this year, but, like Jeanette's, those in the sun really look terrible during the heat of the day and none have held any seeds at all. The ones in more shade (Which is where they ALL were last year, I moved 3 to more sun this year) have only put on one or two blooms. I KNOW they are capable - they are huge - way over 6 feet and yes, many, many 'Y's. Perhaps I'll look into messenger and, in the mean time, make a more concentrated effort to fertlize them and see if that brings them on.

What fertilizer ratio do you guys find best for them?

Thanks again!

Onalee
