I thought this was interesting. I purchased an H. naumanii from Q a while back and it bloomed for me last month. I was surprised to see how much difference the color was when I compared mine with Carol's in photographs. My naumanii's blooms have a good deal less pink color than Carol's. So, with Carol's permission, I thought I would share a photographic comparison of the two, because it really is fascinating how much difference the intensity of light, the amount of humidity, and the temperature makes on coloration in blooms.
Comparisons
Sorry Ann, both are nice but I kind of like Carols better.
I have my first peduncle in my naumanii and since my cutting is from the same source as yours it'll be fun to see what colour my flowers will have!
Christina
I agree, Christina.
The intensity of color in Carol's naumanii is much more intense (and thus, prettier).
I suspect, since you have more bright light than I do, that your color will be closer to that of Carol's (if light is the primary issue here). I can't wait to see your blooms.
I hope others have blooms to compare - I do think it is interesting the differences that geography can make on the colors.
Ann
I like it in both colors. But I do prefer the darker pink. It will be interesting to see the color in Christina's.
I agree, but isn't it interesting how different geographic locations (with weather patterns, heat, humidity, etc.) of the same plant will lead to such differences in bloom coloration?
Ann
Ann-Send a cut back to QP and have her grow it out---would like to see if goes back to a dark flower color----Sandy
I like both colors ...
It is very interesting Ann, I can't remember who posted that there H. obovata was blooming and it was white, mine had a very light pinkish/peach color to it. Or wait maybe SandyC's was a white, heck I can't remember.
It is interesting also how the bloom quality/quantity varies according to the stress level of the plant. I've had many Hoyas bloom as cuttings or in transit, and the colors are usually off, flowers are smaller, and the scent is much reduced or absent.
Heat seems to make a big difference along the Texas gulf coast. It's a miserable time of year. The cool NOID carnosa blooms a deep vibrant pink in the spring and fall. The summer color is faded. Same for H. pubicalyx Red Buttons. Also my RHP bloomed for the first time a few weeks ago. The color was off and I know it's a temperature thing. Poor plants are as pitiful as we are. DH is giving them a hose shower every evening now.
I will try to catch the bloom of the Hybrid cross between H. australis X H. subcalva and we can compare colors. H. naumanii is thought to be a natural cross between the two...but no one took photos so who knows....?
