Thank you smkennedy!

St. Paul, MN(Zone 4b)

Hello All.

Thanks to the kindness and generosity of smkennedy, a local member of Dave's Garden, I now have this gorgeous B. versicolor blooming in my garden. She gave it to me, in bud, when I recently visited her home and gardens. It was an amazing experience - she is obviously a VERY talented gardener and grower. I saw many things I had never seen before. I felt like I should have paid admission! She sent me home with a number of very cool things, but this Brugmansia is the most amazing.

Forgive the ulgy background. I pulled it out of the garden to take this picture.

Thank you again smkennedy.

Another picture that picks up the green veining in in the flower. Should I expect this flower to darken over the coming days?

Erick,
What a nice bloom! Aren't gardeners the very most generous
and best friends in the world?

It won't be long before I can post pictures of Maya and Golden
Lady in bloom - gifts of a wonderful DGer - for nothing in return!

Thank goodness I accidently found this site- I love it!

Oh Im so tickled for you Erick! It depends on what Versicolor it is, if it will get color. I dont know all of them, but a few come to mind.
Is this your 1st bloom ever??
Here is a list of the Versi's and their colors.

What does 'versicolor' mean for brugs?

Thanks for any help in understanding these beauties!

Hi Louise. From what I have read in Preissel's book on brugs, Versicolor is just a classification of one of the wild species of brugs. Ecuador Pink is perhaps the most notable versi. It has the classic look.

The blooms hang straight down, trumpet shaped corolla, calyx wraps around upper flower with one split and the skinny part I call the neck extends below the calyx. The flower can be one of the biggest and the tendrils are a decent length. They bloom in great flushes. The pods are long and skinny, spindle shaped. They like the warmer temps because of where they orignated from.

Most versi type brugs you see these days are a hybrid, a cross between a versicolor and another hybrid or another wild form. Then their characteristics get a bit muddled.

What fun for you Erick. You have a blooming brug!!

If I recall correctly, the first day they are white then they change if they are going to.

That sure was nice of Susan ..The wonders of having a bloom in the garden is so exciting.
Time will tell how much it will darken.. Maybe you will see a difference in the color this morning as you shuffle outside before you get dressed!! LOL
Enjoy!

Good Morning All.

A quick pic before I head out the door for work (GardenGuyKin, you knew I would check it first thing this AM!).

Suddenly now, it has color!

Thank you very much Louise. Gardeners are indeed the most generous people in the world!

Thank you Shelly221. I had a couple Rosamond X Ecuador Pink blooms very, very late in the season last year, and one Sunray bloom on a rooted cutting last fall, but otherwise, this is the first Brug bloom in my garden. And I can't even take credit for it, as I received it in bud.

Thank you Kell. As usual, your commentary is most helpful and interesting.

Thank you ahelms. You can be certain I will post more pictures!

And last, but certainly not least, thank you GardenGuyKin. I literally did shuffle outside this morning before I got dressed to check the bloom out! I was willing to take the chance of being seen by the neighbors in my underwear!

Kell,
Thanks for the enlightenment on brug terms. No doubt,
other newly addicted brug lovers were helped also!
Seems like I learn something from each new thread.

Our Texas high is expected to be around 103 today!
I hope that doesn't broil our plants beyond repair@#$%^&*

As you see more and more brugs on here you will develop your own taste of which type you prefer Louise. There are so many people cross breeding now between multi hybids it is impossible to know just by looking at some brugs anymore what is what. But you can pick out characteristics you like better. My ideal brug would be a multihyrid, with a little of this and a little of that and a lot of that. LOL! Don't fry today!!! When we get hot I hose down the surrounding areas and it brings the temp down for a bit. Of course here in the 80s is high. I would just hate it as hot as you get.

Erick, your new PINK brug is just so pretty hanging there. And you have lots of time left for some more this season!
