Bob - my partner, companion in crime/grime and husband, just finished this new shade house for me.... just off the Greenhouse propagating house. Because of the 'guywires' bracing it...I need to change the 'entrance' a bit...and as I do my little 'soaking in Imidocloprid Dance' with the larger plants...I am moving them in there. It is 10' wide by 20' long. I have 3 poles running the 20' length on either side of the 'center aisle' to hang plants. The shade cloth is 73%...I would have liked 80 or 85% but it is not available. I just love it!!!! The shot of the inside is hard to read...especially since there aren't too many plants up yet. The blobs in the upper part of the photograph are dischidia, growing on fernbark, hanging up there.
Whee..I wonder how long before I need a SW Wing?
Build it and they will come?
I am totally wrapped with this Shade House. The rain gets thru but doesn't soak the pots. The breeze wafts thru...I can cruise between the gh and the shade house... Just gotta deal with the extra long hose I need to reach everything...hard to find a place to coil it up...
Carol, that is awesome!!!
How will the new shade house hold up to high wind and/or torrential downpours?
Ann
Oh you lucky duck. Ah to be able to walk freely amongst the plants without feeling vines all over you or pots getting knocked off.
You will be able to grow them out great in there. Now...to just keep the palms out. Ha Ha.
Marcy
What a great setup, Carol!
Green with envy here!! Carol, what kind of shelving did you use in the main greenhouse? is it wire?
I'm sure it's great to be able to walk through the greenhouse now, however I cant help but envy anyone who gets 'grabbed' by their plants, oh to have such vigorous hoya that they take over the place!! =º)
The stuff of dreams!!! ( i sit with baited breath for any bit of new growth on mine! I bust out the good wine when ever I see any of my hoya thriving let alone new growth, and -oh my gosh, I get out the REALLY good wine for flower buds!!! Woo hoo!)
The shade cloth allows abreeze thru it... The guywires on the corners hold it down as well (still waiting to trip on them or run smack into them with my face!!). There is enough support on the top with the conduit running along the 20' length to provide support. Any winds that tear that puppy down, will take the Greenhouse with it...as well as other stuff! That was our first concern!!!
The benches are wire...and the shelves on the back of the benches are those plastic stackable ones from HD.
A friend came to visit and we pulled out some crates to sit down in there. It was so nice, I am going to get some folding chairs...!
Carol
Looking good Carol! Folding chairs, yes....and a little table....How about some of those string lights, uh and a bar. You could make a cantina out of it. Tiki torches around the perimeter? Party's on.......
Oh, was it supposed to be for PLANTS??????
Yes, you will trip on the guide wires, or maybe you aren't as big a klutz as I am....
Susan, if she puts up lights and installs a bar, lets you & me (and everyone else) head on over. Maybe we can get Ed Gilding to get his nose out of his books for a while and come be the cute bartender (he does know how to make drinks, right?). Bob can be the DJ.
Just a really exceptionally good thought ...(lol)
Ann
Just talked to Ed...he is game!!!!
Yippeee! You have to put runway lights on those guide wires. I happen to know that the area around the greenhouse/new shade house is a huge clearing; big enough for multiple tents/campers,etc........ long way to the bathroom, but tangerines and oranges, bananas fresh from the trees are right there..
Someone bring a commercial grade blender.......
Sooz
Kalola, I was just looking at the photo again. Is the shade house kinda cattywampus or is it my brain?

Shade house is on a slope...and the shade lines might make it seem wierd. It is SO nice in there...with the afternoon breeze there are no mosquitos...
Sooz...no problem with the toilette...We can get a 'Rent a Lua'...or maybe a dozen...? Eating all the fruit.! OH..you should come now...the Lychee trees are totally LOADED with the best lychees I have tasted so far...and HUGE! Must've been the rain.
Anyone have any contacts with a really great band? Think we could get Sting and the Police?
I thought you were going to offer the open areas around the GH as a landing pad for Heliocopters...what with the runway lights on the guywires.....
Just a thought...
Oh very very nice :)
Wow! Even with 73% shade it is incredibly bright in there. That's some Hawaiian sunshine. No wonder they grow like weeds.
Ann
Looks like a perfect little place for hoya's to hang out in. And people....
How about Bon Jovi? :)
How are they doin in the new shade house, Carol? Have you put in the lawn furniture yet? ;-) Pretty soon I'll bet you will be bumping your head in there too. Ha.
Marcy
I haven't watered in there yet...and no rain for 2 days. I HAVE had to water the greenhouse...so I think that in spite of the bright light...they are much better off. Of course, their pots are bigger, hold more moisture and that is a factor.
Well...I saw some resin chairs..high backs with arms...very tempting! I think I will go with those... Hey...a girl gets to sit back, no? Don't they say..."Sit back and smell the hoyas"?...oh, it's roses...no worries...I like hoyas better!!!
Say...how are you all doing with the heat wave over there?
