ebay curtisii
I know, it's so tempting isn't it???
LOL you read my mind MsKitty!!
He sure left the price open, didn't he!!!
It is tempting, and intimidating. I feel weird getting giant mature plants like that. It dosen't feel like cheating, exactly, it just feels like they aren't really MINE, you know? All the time someone else spent growing it, I guess. Like adopting an adult. But that plant is amazing! Anyone going to bid?
But, Mark. If you adopt an adult, you don't have to (necessarily) change their diapers (LOLOLOLOL).
Actually, I have one monster plant that I got from QP as a specimen - H. calycina. I love, love, love that plant. It is the first time I have ever not grown a plant out from a little pot, and I must say, there is something to be said about that instant gratification!
On the other hand, you are correct about the feeling one gets spending time growing small plants into big ones. My H. pubicalyx 'RHP' is an absolute monster now - I got it as a baby in a 4" pot (it was overpotted), but now, 8 years later, it is starting to outgrow it's 10" pot, and do get feelings of pride everytime I look at it.

True, Ann. It's so exciting to find a large Hoya, especially unexpectedly in a nursery, and I certainly have bought them. That curtisii is just so HUGE.
I did just buy some plants from Cowboyflowerman after looking through his "for sale" page. Nice looking stuff. Has anyone here bought from him before?
I bought the H. carnosa 'Holliana', billed as a dwarf plant, 'Iris Marie', and a cumingiana, against my better judgement as my house is quite cool, and that's a tropical grower.
Mark, the cumingiana does just fine in a cool house.
For about four years it resided in my kitchen which had no heat whatsoever (Eugene, OR) and only a couple of hours of late afternoon sun (the room was bright most of the day, however) and it did just fine.
In my new place the average temp is about 68F in the winter (I am a lizard), and it really has no difference in growth. I have had it outside under a balcony now for about a month where it gets bright indirect light all day and about one hour or so of direct evening sun (from about 5:30-7pm) and it has put on a tremendous amount of growth - sometimes over 8 inches on a single vine in the course of a day.
I honestly think you will be pleased with your cumingiana - put it out on your balcony during summer months, hang it in your window during winter, it will be a happy camper.

Before I "discovered" QP, I purchased a lot of hoyas on ebay and many from cowboyflowerman. They were always healthy and nice but not as big as QPs. I could never get the curtsii to grow (tried twice), but can't blame that on the supplier...I would kill that big one in no time, I'm sure.
The cumingiana I got from cowboyflowerman a couple of years ago and it bloomed this spring in my cooler basement under lights. It is now outside in the high heat and humidity and is loving it up. It is a very wild type grower (reminds me of an octopus with about 30 arms reaching out at me ), but the flowers are lovely.

HA HA...Suz...that's what I call my H. cumingiana...the Octopus! and now it is trying to creepinto the house thru cracks in the ceder siding... 'feed me feed me" as someone said. I really love that plant...it is so GENEROUS in its' growth and flowering.
That IS a magnificent H. curtisii Jody is selling!!! Must be at least 6-10 years old. I am really curious what it will go for...finally. Whoever gets it better know what they are doing, because to lose a plant that magnificent would really be a downer!!!
Carol
Wow, it's up to $35 allready. Guess someone really wants it. I'm considering making a bid, but not if the current high bidder is one of you, so fess up if it is!
Sue M., I hate to admit this, but my HD curtisii is still in its EA soil or it would be dead too.
I left it in there because I am not always "annie on the spot" with the watering, and at least this way the poor thing has a chance. It is actually thriving so I'm not gonna change it. I wonder if cowboyflowerman/Jody used water-retaining granules in that dirt.
Ann
HAHAHA...I see that monster going for BIG BUCKS. Smart of him to start the bidding at $1...so that even on the first day there is a feeding frenzy....
Ann--I left mine in the EA soil -----It likes it !! I can still see the pile of wet paper in your kitchen..Sandy OH it seems DH may have a job out of Grants Pass... HUMMMM
Thanks Sue. And Ann, now i feel better about the cumingiana. Does it smell as good as is rumoured?
YES!
