Too hot for begonia's?

(GayLynn) Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

I am new to begonia's. Just bought my first plants last month. I now have about 10 or so. I have them all outside in full shade. It is supposed to reach around 97 degrees today and humid. Is it okay the leave them outside in this heat or should they be brought inside?
Thanks, Gay Lynn

Mine outside are in the ground in a morning sun/shade garden and doing great..it has been in the 90's non-stop here. I also think they love the humidity .
I have some inside also with A/C on and they are doing well also.

Thanks Violet, mine are in pots so I guess I'll just watch that they don't dry out.

Yes, they hate to dry out. Sometiems they do not recover. I notice if I keep them in dappled shade and make sure they are watered I do OK. I wish I had more humidity. They just love humidity!

Which kind did you get Gay Lynn? There are so many to pick from it is fun!!

Kell, I picked up some rex's and two of the angel wings. I remember my grandmother grew the angel wings. I love the big colorful leaves of the rex's and especially the ones that swirl like the escargot. Just begining to discover the wonderful world of begonias. Too afraid to pick up too many as I am not sure how they will over winter here. I have heard many people on the forum say they have a hard time keeping them going in the winter. But will give it a try. Trying to talk my DH into giving me a corner in the basement where I can put up some shelves and hang a grow light over it for the winter.

They hate cold Gay Lynn. Some of my rexes outside die for the winter but come back in spring. The canes almost die for good in the winter. In fact I lost a few. The hairy rhizomes tolerated my winter outside but they were under an overhang on my porch.

Mildew can find them if they are cold and wet and they rot.

I would think light in your basement as long as they are warm and have some humidity, would do fine. But I know nothing. Lali girl is the expert in my world.

Thanks for the info Kell. My basement does get a bit cold. I have a spare bedroom, maybe that would be a better place to set up some shelves with a grow light over it. That way I wouldn't have to fight hubby over some space. He also does woodworking in the basement and saw dust flys everywhere!!
