Some of the leaves on my glads have turned yellow and started to droop. Any ideas? Should I post pictures? Should I yank them out and toss the bulbs? Any suggestons or direction where to start would be appreciated. :-)
glads turning yellow
have they already bloomed for you? If yes, the yellowing is what happens but don't cut off just yet, the leaves provide nutrients so bulbs can do their thing next year.
If they havent bloomed and yellowing, could be over/underwatering, or immature bulbs that are going dormant early (but will likely come back next year).
Don't you just hate it when you get 10 possible answers and you're still "in the dark"
Thank you!!!
They haven't bloomed yet. They are young and probably under 18" tall. I like both of your answers. I can live with either option. :-) Some of these were mixed in with some very thick cannas that popped up. I tried to remove some of the cannas so that the glad would get some sun. I tried to disturb as little soil as possible around the glad, but in some cases the cannas had already sent out roots that were comingling with the glads. If this happened as a result of my disturbing the roots/bulb, will they still come back next year??
yes, I would say so.
yes I think they will be fine, but you still have the problem of overcrowding. your cannas will likely take over eventually (next year or year after that) so you may want to consider another location.
I don't know when is the best plant to transplant glads, hopefully somebody will come along and comment on that.
Well, all the cannas are going this fall. I have hundreds upon hundreds. Entire beds lining the driveway with cannas. I love glads and intended this entire bed to be glads. I'm not sure how the cannas found their way in there. They seem to pop up everywhere. I think the previous owner really liked them. :-)
So, I was thinking this to be my best plan of action: lift the glad bulbs and store this fall. Lift the cannas and find homes for them. I'm going to work on the soil over the winter. I'm afraid that I did not work in enough organic matter and may have created a clay bed at the bottom that would cause them (the glads) to rot over the winter.
sounds like a plan to me.
the bulbs are just babies! I have tons of them... everywhere!!! I let them die off and dug them up to make sure they were ok... they were so I stuck them in a box for a week or two and I'll put back down.
they may go to sleep for 6-8 weeks and then start growing again... and one day they will pop up. As the bulbs becomes a adult they will make flowers! You will see that if you dig the bulbs up they will be larger. Some may even have baby bulbs on them.
Ahhh....babies having babies. :-)
Thank you! I'll be sure to check these!
