Summer Babies - new arrivals!

Between several wonderful trades and our spring trip to the Violet Gallery, I've added lots of fun new AVs to my shelves! I've put leaves down of many of them, so I thought it was time to post some pictures.

I'd also like to use this thread to get some trades set up. Some plantlets may grow fast enough to be ready for fall trades, while others might be better off being shipped in spring, but feel free to post and LMK which ones you'd like to have on a wish list in my trade tracker! I have some other leaves that haven't popped ears yet, so I'll be editing this first post as I go along. I will also try to edit to reflect availability... we'll see how that works out. :-)

I'm hoping to be able to offer leaves for postage this fall, but I hope I don't sound too ungenerous if I say I'd prefer to do a trade for plantlets. But please post your picks on this thread even if we haven't figured out a trade yet... we can work out the details via Dmail.

As I've mentioned elsewhere, while I can often be tempted to trade for AVs I don't have, I am really hoping to trade some of these plantlets for sunny perennials that I can plant outside. My style is more informal cottage-garden, and it's easier for me to find places for shorter plants (especially ground covers) than for taller ones. I love all shades of purple, pink, burgundy, etc, but I pretty much have enough yellow out there, and I'm not a big fan of gold/orange/peach colors.

I'm also willing to trade for pots, especially 1 to 2 inch ones -- little plastic ones, Oyama planters for minis (up to their 3 inch size), mini Dandy pots, little ceramic pots, etc.

I also have some plantlets left from last winter's propagation efforts, many of which are at or near blooming size. There are other varieties that may have one or two plantlets available, and I will try to add them to the list at some point. I included rooted suckers on this list also, as they should be a nice size by fall.

I've been putting mini leaves down in little plastic take-out trays with holes in the top and in the bottom and about an inch of light potting mix. So far, this seems to be working well, although I am going to have to start potting up individual mom leaves with their babies once the babies start getting bigger.

'Skagit Victory Trails' leaves are the bottom row in the photo. The variegated plantlets above them are 'Ramblin Reflections', and at the top you can see 'Ruth's Girl'. All three of these varieties are girl-leaf trailers.

Here are the first blooms on 'Trinket Terrific'. I love the mosaic variegation on the bright, almost lime-green leaves!

From top to bottom rows: 'Persian Doll', 'Persian Lace' (dark green leaves), 'Chimpansy', 'Baker Pink Star', 'Lil Ballerina', and 'Booman'.

There are all ones that I don't yet have as a plant, only as a leaf, so I have dibs on the first plantlet. But as you can see, there are at least 2 plantlets coming along of each of them already! :-)

Here's a closer look at those 'Lil Ballerina' babies because they are just too cute... the leaves are about the size of my fingernail! I sent the mom plant to Allison, so I hope she'll post its first bloom pics! I think the other mom plants that "donated" to this tray were the ones from Lorry's order from VG (I picked them up and shipped them; the leaves were a sort of handling fee, LOL).

From top to bottom: 'Little Crystal', 'Merlot Trail', 'Deer Trail', and 'Angel Tears Trail'. It looks like there will be several of each of these, so hopefully that will be plenty to go around. :-)

Here's 'Optimara Little Crystal', showing off in the Belleek pot that my mom brought back for me this spring. I think the blooms look like a cloud of little white butterflies... it was a last minute addition to my basket at VG, because I spotted it in bloom and just had to have it!

Critter...one of my favorite perennials is 'Nepeta' aka Catmint. It blooms non-stop from end of April to killing frost usually late October. Mine stays about 1 foot tall. Very easy and rewarding. The lavender color is soothing and nice mixed with other colors or just pretty all by itself.

I also have 'lamb's ears' (siver felted leaves). Stays low except when blooming. Looks good in the perennial border and under rose bushes.

You may already have these, but if not, you are more than welcome. Both love the sun and can take dry spells no problem.

I've got a bunch of catnip (currently 3-4 feet tall & blooming), but no 'Nepeta'... I'd love some! You & I need to get together... please Dmail me, and LMK your schedule, maybe you can drop by for coffee or lunch sometime.... you may have your pick of my extra plantlets, and we may be able to find some outside plants for you as well (like that rampaging 'Chocolate Peppermint').

Those babies are adorable! I love propagating the lil guys. They are so cut ewhen they pop their lil ears up.
Lil Crystal is one of my very first AV's and one of my can't live w/o AV's.
I love the pot yours is growing in.

I'm taking a break from packing & shipping for a bit, both because there is so much I need to catch up on and because of the heat. Makshi & April, I do have your names on your plantlets, and your boxes will be the first to go out in the next round.

I guess I need to take more pictures, or post FC pictures, to get people interested in my list at the top. I'll keep editing that first post as I go along, so please check up there every so often. Thanks!

We've got a heat wave on the way too... hard to imagine it getting even more sauna-like than it's been this past week! The weeds in the garden are going to have a little holiday, unmolested by me, I think. LOL

I have a couple of catnip plants that really need to be cut back, and I would love to send your kitty a treat.... do you think cuttings wrapped in (dry?) paper towel would travel all right, or would they mush? It probably wouldn't take long to dry some for her if you think that would send better... I can stuff a BE!

I can't believe how hot it has been here. Hubby said it was 130!!! in the car when he got of work yesterday! Goodness sakes!

Yes... I'll do my best to get a baby going. My plant of it is small but I used to be pretty good at getting them from leaf wedges.
I think I have about 8 rexes to play with, too. So that might be fun.

I'm also trying to prop some Streps. I think they are so pretty!

Just wanted to add that these guys arrived in 106 temps and are looking much better now..lol

Your Streps and Begonias are so pretty MsC. I enjoy growing Strep's by leaf their easy and fast. And I have a few Begonias are fun love the ones with colorful foliage !
It's been so hot here also. The A/C runs non-stop. Not as hot as you are but in the 90's feels like a steam bath here.

Wow, what a great group of new plants! I'd say you managed to revive them beautifully.

Allison, I know you're trying to downsize your AV collection for the move, but LMK if there are any you "must have," and I'll put them on your wish list. I can grow them to a bigger size for you if you're willing to wait until spring... I think you already have any you wanted of the older plantlets I listed.

Thanks jill but not taking anymore. Not trying to downsize for move.I'm getting rid of all my plants except a half a dozen or so.
We won't be moving for awhile new home is a dump needs new walls, plywood floors everything...will move faster hopefuly if God lets our home sell fast ! Then we don't have to pay two lot rents and electric bills each month.
I am have been selling ALL my plants. My stands and lights are sold hubby will del. them next Saturday. I sold all my Chimeras, and about 200 plants and about 50 leaf pots so far. I even sold some large plants for $25,.00 each even let my big Snow Lepoard Russian plant got for $25.00. I contacted my local AV group so people have been coming to the house ! I can not take care of them.
I will keep my Annabelles ! and few others for window shelves not so many so someone can water them.
Our new trailer home will cost a good 10 thousand to fix it up ... so every penny will be pitched in. Gallons of paint 45 pieces of 3/4 plywood, roof over and more :))
In one week Hubby has done a lot. Cleaning,bug boming, got all the carpets and floors ripped up, wash walls windows priming walls and celings....A new adventure ! Nice it's just next door.
We will have more than twice the amount of room now 3 bedrooms 2 full baths, large living room and den/family room dining room zillions of closets and more. I know we will enjoy the front screen in porch the whole length of the front of the home. I'm sure I'll have some Begonias, Chiritas, Epsicas growing out there.
I'mi n bed 99.9 percent of the time, just can't do it anymore.

I'm sorry you've had to give up so many of your lovelies! It sounds like a good decision, but I'm sorry you had to make the choice. I'm glad you were able to get good prices for your plant -- you sure had some beauties, and you know they will be greatly enjoyed in their new homes! This way, you'll be less overwhelmed by caring for so many plants, and you'll be able to have more fun with the ones that remain. And I am sure that the porch of your new home soon will be decked out with hanging baskets for you and your DH to enjoy!

I'm hoping everything goes smoothly with your move. I know there is a lot to be done, and I'm wishing strength & energy to your DH! He's a hero!

Just wanted to mention, I just added a link to my "haves" list at the top of this thread.... I will put down leaves on request (if the plant can spare them; some varieties are still small) so I can send you a leaf pot. You've got a better chance of getting a leaf that way, since I end up with extra leaves at different times as I groom & repot plants.... plus, the leaf will at least have roots and may even have starting putting up ears by fall.

Thanks! You know, I have 4 or 5 leaves of 'Raspberry Sizzle' that are putting up little plantlets now... ;-)

I've got a couple of buds starting on the 'Buckeye Cherry Topping' that Allison grew for me! I really love the Buckeye series, especially the pink variegated/red back leaf varieties... totally eye catching even when they're not in bloom. I think 'Grape Slush' and 'Apache Victory' are similarly gorgeous. I think there was discussion a while back of forming a "Buckeye Fan Club." :-)

Ah yes...I knew you loved the Buckeye Series...I love the Apache Series and have a few of them.
I have to find room for babies...I lost a whole tray of my babies after the move & haven't started putting any down yet. I've been busy replacing them with new varieties & other gessies & most of those have a baby or two I've been potting up. Now, all the babies I set aside in the terrarium containers are holding on But I need to check on them soon..lol

I don't think i will ever get things settled here...lol

Well, we are finally finishing one of our settling-in projects here! It's nothing compared to MsC's library, but Jim & I moved dozens of boxes of books here (90% his, well maybe only 85%, mostly SFF), and they've been only partly unpacked & shelved. He finally sorted through another dozen boxes that had been stored for about 10 years, and he decided about half of them were worthy of shelf space. Now he's going through the other books, taking down any that "weren't that good." I think he finally really looked at the room and the bookshelves, and he realized that he didn't have much room for new books unless he took some away. I've been helping with this project (a good way to ensure that my favorites end up on the shelf!), and I'm pleased to report that authors A through K are sorted and shelved! This weekend, he'll do some weeding-out of authors L through Z, and then I'll help him shuffle the books around on those shelves.

Now, maybe we can do some painting this fall.... ROTFL!

I've been busy with my "Uptown babies" (on the plant stand in the upstairs bedroom)... moved a few trays of plantlets to a basement light shelf, making more room for the plants that remain, and sorting out the ones that I'm keeping from those that are available. Now I need to make a list of the plants & plantlets that need new homes! :-) I've been doing a lot of repotting and up-potting and putting down suckers, too.

'Sure to Please' is another that may be going out in all my fall boxes... my original plant suckered like crazy this spring, producing lots of nice crowns to pot up, plus I had a well grown leaf pot that yielded I think 7 more plantlets.

Hey, CritterO at least your books are on shelves, ours are still in boxes in storage. I did keep out a few boxes of bedtime books like the Av's & terrariums, inspirational books. I have no idea where we will get to put all of ours...lol

Have you seen Ness' Firefly??? That lil thing is such a cutie...I plant to put a leaf or two down as well.

There is one I do want & just haven't nabbed it yet... Deer Path Trail.. I saw a pic of it on the cover of an older AVSA mag & feel in love . if you happen to have it Id be thrilled to trade,too.

Excellent! I've added those two to your list. I was just admiring Ness' Firefly.... I think it was on the Pat's Pets website... I'm glad you have a leaf down! I have a couple of less-than-stellar looking leaves down of 'Yesterday's Child' (they broke off in transit, so of course they were potted up), but I have hopes of eventual plantlets from that one, maybe not until spring though!

VG lists/labels the plant as 'Deer Path', but seeing the blooms I'm pretty sure it's actually 'Deer Trail'. ('Deer Path' is actually on the current AVSA "most wanted" list, so I'd be surprised to see it in plain sight on a vendor list.)

I took a photo last night, but it doesn't really do the shell-pink of the blooms justice (deeper on the back side of the petals, barely blushing the inside). The flowers have a delicate charm that reminds me of 'Opt. Little Crystal', and the leaves have a rich dark color that just sets off the blooms.

Oh, and yes, DH may have mentioned a time or two that he thought the AVs were getting out of hand... LOL... but he knows I have fun with them... I think he's glad that the majority are mini's and that I plan to ship out a bunch of plantlets again this fall! It helps that the kids in our family get really excited about getting a blooming AV as a gift... Uncle Jim may simply tolerate most of my plants, but he sure adores his nieces & nephews, so plants that make them happy make him happy also.

I also took another "first blooms" photo of 'Raspberry Sizzle', with the second flower more open. (Kenton, I can't believe you haven't also laid claim to leaf pots or plantlets of any of my new mosaic variegated plants... the foliage is just so cool! 'Trinket Terrific' might be too pink-pink for you, but I think you'd like 'Raspberry Sizzle', and I also have 'Sterling Trinket', with darker green mosaic foliage and blue-violet blooms.)

Oooh-ooo, I like the type of Mosaic on that pictured one. Put'er in PF, would you? I have 'Sterling Trinket' from Pat's Pets. I also have 'Midget Lilian' at home.
Do you grow 'Cherokee Trail?' It's variegation is so heavy, you can't tell what kind it is.

Yes, I've got a couple of 'Cherokee Trail' plantlets that I grew from leaf (I'm thinking from MsC?)... they're doing well, were recently separated & up-potted! I think it's going to be a fun one to grow out.

Here's my newest bloomer! It took me a dozen tries to get the lighting/color right... it's an absolutely charming plant. :-)
