A new dwarf .. TRUE papyrus, stays short about 24 inches ans grows just like the giant one. Saw this one today at the Better Homes and Gardens trial/ test/display gardens in Des Moines.

Eclipse; That is stunning. An the lotus are to die for. Do they winter where they are or do you have to move them lower in the pond.
This my first year trying lotus, So it's new ground to me.

Knoxville, TN

I got one a couple of weeks ago on sale at a local nursery. Really like it. I'd been lusting after the big papyrus at Logees but didn't have room or enough sun.
This smaller one is supposed to be OK in partial shade. So far, it's doing great. Has lots of new "blooms" coming out. I really like it.
Logees.com has the big one and a dwarf one, although the blooms on their dwarf look much smaller than mine are. I'll post some photos when I have a chance to take some.

Randb, this isn't my pond, its at Merediths trial gardens in Des Moines. Lotus cannot have frost touch the tops of the tubers...so they cannot live in water this shallow overwinter.I use to keep my lotus in pots in the basement in winter, right after the first frost I would lift the pots and put in a cool spot in low light till spring, keep the soil slightly damp not wet and don't let the soil get totally dry, when spring comes take the plant in the pot out and put back in the pond.I actually grew several lotus in large waterproof pots(30 gal and up) and grow them in the yard. keep 4 inches of water above the soil level at all times and presto easy lotus without a pool. They need half day of sun at the very least. :-)

Oh, that is cute!

Eclipse: Now I'm trying to decide do I use pots, or do I use my big round stock tank. Dig it down to ground level and basicly have another pond. That would be just for lotus???? I do have 2 pots I haven't measured but would be at least 20 gal They might fit better the way my yard is situated. Love that briliant blue. We may have to stop in D.M. on our way back from Ohio see if they are still blooming.
Do you have the address of Merediths?? We would love to visit there.

Nice pond what a great place to visit.

I bought that Dwarf Papyrus this Spring at the Cincinnati Flower Show. It's Cyperus papyrus 'Nanus'.
http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/55189/index.html
It actually mimics the true Papyrus in everything but size.
It is now seeding just like the 'big gun'.
Mine, dwarf and regular, came from Aquascapes in Indiana.

I love these true papyrus and here in southern Ohio they are loving this heatwave! lol
