Good news but big headache

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

Well, we finally did it. We got a new puppy for Zackary. He has been lonely since our other doggie died so we got him a puppy. Which of course is why I have a headache. The puppy loves my plants. I have AVs from my bottom shelves all over everywhere. I don't know what plants go in what pots since the puppy loves to take them out of their pots when she plays with them. So I was wondering if any of you with doggies have any ideas for keeping the puppy out of my plants. I would not use the bottom shelves if I did not have to have them but I don't have enough room without them. Any advice would be appreciated. Oh, the one other good thing is that we have had her for several days and she has not had one accident. We take her outside and tell her to "go potty" and she does. Then we praise her for what she has done. So I'm really happy that the potty training is going so well. But what to do about my plants is another whole story. Here is a photo of her. She is such a cutie.

Here is close up shot of her eating. Notice how she wraps her hands around the bowl.

AWW she so cute. We got Precious when she was 4 pounds 8 weeks old and she has never bothered with my plants.
When she was little if a pot or solo cup fell on the floor she'd play with it and chew it.
But she had lot's of toys and we - gave her lots of attention and she has never botherd the plants even though she could have easliy stand on her hine legs and take the second shelf if she wanted to. But not once !
What kind of dog is she Jesse ? I love her pink collar!

Cute puppy!
You can buy bitter apple and such at the HD and what not hun :)
It tastes bad and smells (at least puppies think so)
It has broken my idiots of playing with my plants

Adorable! She has such a sweet, sweet face!!

If it's mostly plants on the lower shelves of your plant stand that she gets into, you might be able to screen off that shelf, maybe even use one of those baby gate/fences to screen off you plant area while she is learning the difference between plants and toys.

Hi Jesse!

She's precious!
Don't worry Jesse she will move on to shoes & table legs...
I do know the feeling though when the Chi Herd were all pups they did exactly the same thing.:)

Awww...she's so cute! I feel your pain. I have 4 boston terriers. All are 2 and over but still spazes. The two younger ones ate my couch and arm chair when they were pups and I just now feel secure enough to go pick out new livingroom furniture. Real redneck decor going on w/ duct tape on the arms where they chewed accented by mismatched slipcovers and old sheets.

I quit keeping cats when the kids moved out because I'm not a cat lover(don't hate them...just don't want any)and because the last kittens we had, climbed over the baby gate into the room where my light benches were and destoryed 6 or 8 trays of leaves on the bottom shelf that had just been struck...ARGH! No more cats for me.

The only plant my cat Blake has ever bothered were the impatiens I tried to grow in a windowbox in my Chicago studio apartment... he didn't eat them as such, but he loved crunching the stems with his little kitten teeth. Like celery! LOL

Okay, I'm not trying to be a show off but I just had to show you this one. I guess you can call me a very proud mama. This morning she decided to lay on the bottom shelf of DH desk and looked so cute. So here she is.

Awe! What a cuite pie... they really know how to pull those heart strings huh???

What kind of pup is she Jesse?? I love her fluffy fur.

Hi MsC,

Her daddy is Siberian Husky/Wolf mix and her moma is a chow. But she does not have that big dark purple tongue like most chows and I hope it does not change. She really is a cutie pie. She will be three months old on July 20th. I have fallen deeply in love with her already. I'm not sure if I mentioned it but her name is Lady. My border collie, Zackary, is 11 now and I think she will keep him on his toes. They are beginning to bond and are so cute together. And yes, they know how to pull those heart strings.

That's an interesting mix !She's lovely and her name suits her!
I'm sure Zach will enjoy having a Lady around.:)

She reminds me of an old Collie Mix I had & it brough back some wonderful memories.

Enjoy her!

What a darling pup! About your bottom shelf...How about buying some window screening and wrapping it around that bottom shelf for a while? The new fiberglas screening won't block your view of the lovelies too much, and you can unwrap it easily to water and work with the plants.

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Ahhh what a cutie!!! I thought of the window screen too. When mine were little I think I bought every kind of toy made and then made them a toy box and filled it up and they left the plants alone after a bit of persuasion with the squirt gun. Squirt when near plants and toss toy, squirt when near plants toss toy, I was well trained..LOL...Lauri

Good approach, Lauri! I think it's really helpful not only to scold/squirt/etc when they are being bad, but to reward them in some way when they stop the bad behavior and do something acceptable. When training my cat to stay off tables, I'd yell at him to get down (and "encourage" him further if necessary), but once he was back on the floor I made sure to tell him, "You're OK, that's a good cat, that's a good place to be..." I think that sort of thing helps animals to figure out exactly which behavior is upsetting you.

Well,he's not a dog but here my new baby born 4/28/06(8 weeks old in this pix). Hub's wanted to name him after the donkey in "Shrek" and since he was called "Donkey" ,I wasn't naming him that so we dubbed him"Eddie"in honor of Eddie Murphy, who(whom?)provided the voice of"Donkey".Alreaday soiled and mischeivous so he gets called"Edward" a lot.

bigred so Precious ! Does he live in your home ?

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

LOL...he has a pasture up the road with his momma Molly, and horse aunties...Auntie Jewel and Auntie BB...assorted feathered relatives from the wrong side of the blanket. Alas, from a broken home as he daddy,Billy Jack, lives further down the road at my son's house.

What a face!

Remember Quickdraw McGraw and his little sidekick Baba Looie?

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Bigred~ OMG, he is so cute!!! My husband and I just moved into town two years ago and had to give up our beautiful old gal donkey, "Dixie". But donks are the best, aren't they??? We ended up donating her to a theraputic riding stable for children. Dixie may have been ornrey with the rest of us, but with my oldest son (who has Down syndrome), she would hold perfectly still for whatever he wanted to do ~lol!!

Jesse~ We also had a dog who was a mix of half chow. He was such a babydoll!!! Honestly, he bonded with me as a puppy and was such a protector even then we named him "Shield". He was the most laid back dog ever...but I wouldn't have wanted to see what he would do if someone threatened me~lol~ He loved everything except the magpies...he would just get so mad when they were eating his food :) And the magpies loved getting him going...they just flew up into the trees and laughted at him!!

Ohhhh, now I miss my animals :(

But so glad to see others having their time. Of course, I still have four dogs so I guess I will be all right!!

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

Try putting a couple of these on the bottom shelf with the violets.
My dogs and cats don't like it at all and don't go near it. Smells pretty disgusting if you get up close and personal with it. From a distance, you can't smell it.
