Trumpet vine

Valencia, PA(Zone 5b)

I am going to try to contain a trumpet vine in a container. Do you think this is possible? Others have told me that they have bought a 5 gallon bucket, cut the hole out of it and planted the vine in the bucket, putting it up against a tall trellis, and was able to keep it from being invasive that way. Any suggestions? I like the plant, but live in the woods and don't want it to get away from me. Karen (liebran)

May be instead of cutting the bottom totally out of the pot you could just put a lot of holes in the bottom and then put landscape cloth (the black cloth with small holes) over the bottom? I too like these plants and have seen them with their beautiful flowers however I have friend with one in his garden (that wasn't contained) and it is a true NIGHTMARE. So I am fearful of introducing it in any way.

I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOO glad ya'll are posting this info. I'm getting a trumpet vine this weekend, and was planning on putting it in the ground! NOT!

If you all go to the Plantfiles, Trumpet Vine is listed as one of the top 10 "Most Invasive Plants". It's good and informative reading!

I planted two trumpet vines last year thinking they would be huge rambling beasts...planting them directly in the ground I was sort of nervous having heard so many bad things about them. I have to say I've been very disappointed. They are maybe 10-12" tall.

So much for my rambling beasts and the trellis upon which I hoped they would sprawl...lol.

I amended the soil when I planted them as we have very sandy soil. I also fertilize them and they are in a semi-sunny spot most of the afternoon. I just put in two clitoria vines a couple days ago and moved a grow bag of morning glories over to the trellis in hopes of seeing something climb on the trellis this season !!!

Julie - Don't forget the old garden motto:

'First year they sleep, second year they creep and third they leap...'

What in the world is a GROW BAG?!!!

Hmmmmmmm sleep, creep, and hopefully leap next season.

I will post a pic of my grow bags when I get home.

It looks like a heavy duty garbage bag sorta with drain holes in the bottom. You fill them with soil and they sit (they are pleated at the bottom so they flatten out) like a pot. The material is heavy duty and they come in a variety of sizes and they are very affordable in comparison to buying pots etc... Although if you're going for a decorative look they aren't nearly as attractive as pots can be.

If I were home I'd post a pic for you to see. I have my veggies...tomatoes and peppers in grow bags, some morning glories and some dahlia's as well. I bought my bags on ebay and they are just cents a piece.

I have an area when a trumpet vine was going up a tree but the tree was lost to Katrina. I have had the stump removed and the vine is coming back big time... It now has nothing to climb on... my question is ?????? should I try to remove it or trellis it... I cannot decide. It always just did it's thing with no attention. I understand they are really hard to remove.. help!!!!!!! I find mine is leaping like crazy ..I have cut it down completely three times this season. shirleyt

Shirleyt you could try spraying with Roundup. This may do the trick but you'll have to do it for several years, couple times a season and depending on how big it is underground it may not work. This is a very tenacious plant that I think is nearly impossible to eradicate.

Oh Shirley, good luck.

Trumpet Vine is one of my favorite even though it is so invasive. I have wonderful childhood memories of them and still love them. There was a home in the older part of town here that had a trumpet vine growing up the tree. The tree was old and diseased so they cut it down but left the trunk about 7 feet tall. Over the years the trumpet vine had climbed the trunk of the tree and made a beautiful canopy. I love driving down that street in the summer when it's in bloom. I wish I had a pic of it!

Here is what is in my backyard.....and they come up everywhere!!! I just pull them out of the ground and go on!

I had a simply lovely lavender trumpet vine that was at least 30 years old on a fence that I share with a neighbor. Or shall I say it was growing in the fence. When the fence had to be replaced I tried to argue that I wanted to save the plant. All three men said no way that they had just invested money into the fence and they were not going to let the vine pull it down again. so they cut the heck out of it. I gained at least two and a half feet of depth when it was gone and it really opened up my yard. It was so bare! I was so sad. But it is coming back I try to pull the tendrels out of the fence boards when I see them. So in a nutshell yes they are very invasive. If you like to prune, go for it, but keep in mind it grows like gangbusters.

dwerland just a thought what if you sprayed round up on the fence itself???Maybe that would make it an unfriendly place for the vine to attach .....just a thought... My vine is in an area that can be controlled to a trellis ...lots of space and can just be mowed around..

Brinda , after seeing yours I am going to leave it..It is just too hot to worry with it and it looks like it is worth it.... I will just give it something to run on an mow around it for control. Sounds like a game plan to me....mine is red with yellow center.. I did not see one that looked like it on plant files. shirley

I got a cutting.. from the roof of the ChelseaHotel.. and brought it back for my roof garden..where it is poised to make a move on NYC... I try and keep it out of the garden.. growing on the sunny side of the fence... but it is growing through the fence... and into the shade... just to have a place to go...where it is unwanted..
