OT but trying to ID plant

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

I was at HD and they had a small tree/bush about 3 feet tall and it was so pretty. But no one knew what it was. So I found a piece of it on the floor and asked could I have it to show my friends to maybe get an ID. So here it is. I have it in a glass of water hoping that it will take root. The picture is not very clear but the stem is pink and the leaf is green with pink and yellow in the middle. Anyone know what this could be?

Thanks,
Jesse

If the stem is semi-hard, you might have better luck rooting it in moist potting mix (high humidity helps, like covering with plastic but not letting it touch the leaves), maybe dip it in a bit of rooting hormone if you have it.

I'm trying to think what it could be.... it's not ringing any bells right away, LOL. Was it with the outdoor shrubs and perennials, or was it from their selection of tropicals?

Ohhhh, I hope it roots for you, Jesse. That's really nice foliage. Good Luck!

It was outside with the tropicals at Home Depot.

You might try the ID forum or the tropicals forum... a photo of the whole plant, if possible, would probably help a lot.

Whatever its name, that foliage is gorgeous!!

have it here in all the s tores...too early to tax my memory..lol...i would suggest putting it in vermiculite that has been dampened...put in plastic bag...and in shade...make sure not too much mositure though.

Can't be absolutely sure but know that my local HD was selling these a few weeks ago and wish I'd picked one up, Caricature plant (Graptophyllum pictum)- Most often this and the chocolate are available.

Thanks for all of your help. With your help I was finally able to ID this beautiful plant. It is called GRAPTOPHYLLUM PICTUM WAIMEA. Way to go April.

Just by chance saw the plant at HD and it caught my eye so that's the only reason I came close.

I had this plant for several years...it died out just this past winter...I still haven't figured out why?

I had set the pot of my plant into a larger potted palm tree in my south window, and it sent roots right out through the bottom of the pot into the palm's pot!

It grows very well and easily indoors in a sunny window, and it can get quite tall.

I'd try rooting in soil, as critterologist suggested.
I tried rooting this in water several times, and was never successful.

I think that is Jamacian croton (which is actually a bad description since it is not croton at all)
if it is that :) I have some in my front yard :) but a different color variety

LOL YES>.what April said! I have the chocolate!

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

I had that one ('Chocolate') a few summers ago and it either got too wet or too dry...can't recall which one?!

Have you ever tried rooting any, Lorry?

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

I have not purchased one yet. I wanted to find out what it was before I did. Now I want to go and buy one. They are so pretty.

Erm...I don't think I have rooted it...We buy it so cheaply here..it just was not worth it..but now you all have me curious :)
We dont' water it....so I can't suggest the wet or dry..it seems happy in our rainy season or in our dry just as well :)

Jesse :) I LOVE mine :) they are wonderful landscape plants here :)

My husband has something like 7 in the front yard

Lorry
The chocolate was the one that I saw @ HD- they were selling in large pots- can't recall the size- @ about 17.00 +/-; I wanted one but wasn't sure they'd do well here. Our HD carries things that should never be sold here and puts hydrangeas in full sun, in the parking lot! LOL. Anyway, does you DH have them in sun or shade? I love different colored foliage. Right now have been increasing my collection w/ darker leaves.

Hey guys,

Guess what I finally broke down and bought last night. The caricature plant. I have been looking at them for so long and I just had to buy one. And they were actually looking much better since it rained. So I broke down and bought one. Here is a photo of what it looks like. I think it looks pretty good compared to what it used to look like. Do you think I should repot it in a bigger pot? And if so, what size? What type?

Thanks,
Jesse

Jesse I'd put it in a bigger pot, maybe twice that size. Type of pot is pretty much what you prefer; I generally use clay because that's what I like; that being said, if you use clay you have to water more often because there is greater evaporation through clay, it's poreous where as plastic retains moisture so you wouldn't have to water as often. The plant looks really nice!
