Your plants want SEX!

Louisville, KY

Nice title hum LOL. Well a hybridizer friend once told me a plant that has sex is a happy plant. I am not sure if this is true or not but the babies from breeding can be very exciting to watch. New color patterns and some giants or minitures you never are really sure what you will get in this game.
So each year I put on my huge Bee suit on and run around pollinating plants in the hopes of something completely new. A lot of times I have people telling me what to make short big flowering plant. These are nice but I am usually trying to make huge bright foliage plants and if I make a few dwarf big flowering things along the way fine. Not many flowers get past me so you will find a pretty big mixture of things on here. I will be putting my new canna hybrid photos up on the canna forum as well.

The first hybrid attempt today was Ensete Ventricosum X Ensete glaucum These banana cousins are huge growers Ventricosum with huge trunks and a deep red midvein and Glaucum taller with a bluish green look . Picture of ventricosum flower.

Next up is the Monstera deliciosa crossed with Monstera standleyana. To tell the truth these are such easy growers and flower easily I am not sure why hybrids have not been produce. But from what I gather no one has ever tried any Monstera breeding before? Here is a pic of Monstera standleyana flowers are in the back ground.

Here is a picture of Monstera Deliciosas flower. This is the second attempt in two days. It will take a long time for me to know if it take and it can take almost a full year for the seeds to rippen. If I do get hybrids I am sure they will be very unique as both have very odd foliage.

I have tried this a few times usually I miss out because they bloom so early. I am thinking that planting them late might have helped me get to them this year. The only other problem besides missing the blooms is most the hybrids are sterile which seem to be about 99% of the ones being sold anymore.
This is Caladium bicolor known as florida Beauty crossed with Caladium bicolor species. I put the Florida beauty pollen on about 5 different caladium plants.

And no I did not mess with the coloring on this photo. LOL
