Left on their own for six days, in 90+ degree weather...

High Desert, NV(Zone 5a)

I had surgery last friday and haven't checked on the squash plants since then. My husband picked and cooked a half dozen or so for us while i lay in bed, slept and watched way too much vapid TV. Since it is so early in the season here in zone 5 i figured there would be a few getting big, but they are taking over the yard!

Today i had my husband pick the big ones. This basket is 16" x 13". Now why is it that my neighbors avoid me this time of year? I am going to have to resort to drive-by squashings, just leave bags of squash on peoples doorstep in the middle of the night...

Actually (most of) our family really like squash :)

There are 5 varieties in this pic.

Oops, still a bit foggy headed.

Wow, i really am a bit soft in the head. I just did the math, and the plants have only been left un-checked by me for 5 days.

Great looking squash!
I hope you're recovering well.

Drive-by-squashings! Can we report you for that?

Speedy recovery to you...

Los Alamos, NM(Zone 5a)

Those of us who grow squash tend to get avoided during squash season. But wait until the tomatoes come on! All those friends will come crawling back. Georgeous basket of squash. Actually, I bet your friends would really like to have some. Zone 5 is pretty good for veggies!
I don't get squash bugs here in Los Alamos, but just a few miles downhill, along the Rio Grande, they do. Looks to me like you don't get them either! Cool nights seem to do a number on squash bugs and those of us at high altitude have cool nights.

Love the high altitude and COLD winters! Makes it hard to winter over for the little buggers.

Thanks for the well wishes! I am recovering nicely and the surgery was a good thing, so nothing unexpected or catastrophic.

The only real tragedy was a crook-neck and a lebanese white that got too big to be edible, the girls had fun painting them though :)

edited to add,
pajaritomt you are so right, they're going to come crawling back when the tomatoes and corn come on, not so much the eggplant... they don't know what they're missing.

Oh, beware beware. Here in Colorado, a couple girls in one of the smaller towns did drive-by cookie-ing one night. They'd knock on the door, leave the cookies, and then run away.

One old woman claimed that she was so terrified by the girls knocking at her door that she had to go to the hospital with an anxiety attack. She sued them for damages.

And won!

Some people.

I read about that online somewhere. Big eye roll.

I guess ya never know. I will keep my squash and mater's to myself!!

White_Hydrangea,
Wow, that is ridiculous! I have never actually left squash on a doorstep, well, except for neighbors and friends when they aren't home. We actually eat most of what we grow. The occasional squash that gets crazy big growing unnoticed somewhere usually does end up on a doorstep with no note, but just as a joke to someone we know. We mailed a 3' zucchini to a friend of my husband's with no return address once. That was pretty funny, that was before 9-11 though, might not make it through the mail these days.

and Blue, don't you go threatening me, i have your address! You might find a 3' zucchini in the mail. LOL Looks like you'll be eating yours in a week or so.

LOL at the 3 foot zucchini in the mail! Congrats on a great looking crop of squash, and I hope your recovery continues to go quickly & smoothly!

I wish somebody would subject me to a drive by squashing! LOL Bad vine borer problem here, I didn't even try the squash this year, but I adore summer squash & zukes! I've been reduced to buying squash & eggplant at the farmer's market. (OK, I admit that's actually not tragic... I get very nice ones there.) Maybe Blue will take pity on me.... or I will sneak over when she isn't looking (I know just when, too!). Ha!

Come on over! There will be squash for the taking this weekend for sure. Don't let me find a 3' squash when I get back!!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

If you end up with a 3 ft. squash, we can always mail it to Melissa! ROTFL I think that monster sounds too big even for stuffing & baking!

Sorry I missed you this afternoon, Kim! I had a couple of tomatoes for you, too. :-( Left you a message, hope to TTYS!

Well no sooner do i mention it than...

Yesterday i found 3 squash bugs (Anasa tristis) on my winter squash.

Darn! Hope there aren't a bunch more.
