Can I dig my Bulbs now?

Riverton, UT(Zone 6a)

I've got Iris, dutch iris and day lilies that I need to move to other places. How do I safely do this and can I do it right now? Thanks Lesh

Hello alesha801. It is nice to see a fellow Utahn on DG!

About two years ago I had to move a lot of my plants because I dug up all of my terrible clay soil. I dug out the clay 18" deep and put in better soil with lots of nutrimulch. It worked out so good. My flowers in my front yard look great now. It was back breaking work but well worth it.

I have some daylilles that I had to move. All I did was dig them out and tried not to disturb the root as much as I could. I put the root ball in a plastic bag until I got all of my new soil in the site. It worked. They didn't seem to even have a problem with it. No wilting at all. They look a ton better now. The new soil pepped them right up!

I looked in my "Sunset Western Garden book" and this is what they had to say about your question:

"When clumps become crowded (usually after 3 to 6 years), divide them in fall or early spring. "

I think if you moved your Daylillies this fall you would be fine. That is about the time I replaced my soil. The end of September early October was when I moved mine.

As for the Dutch Iris, I am thinking that you are going to have to wait until fall also to move them. I don't have any in my garden but "Sunset Western Garden book" states that you should plant them in the fall.

I hope that this information helps. Good luck!! Let me know how it works out for you.
