Magnifiqué's Skirts

Coal Center, PA(Zone 6a)

Finally talked myself into tearing open one of her exquisite blooms. Wasn't easy ..lol
But neat to see her skirts laid open.

That must have been Very difficult to do Alice!!!!
Such a multitude of skirts she has going on there. Exquisite indeed!
So.... with that many skirts is the calyx the corset?
;)

Well, yes :-) Except it goes all the way past their heads ;-) ..LOL
Too bad she was not red. I could have named her Scarlet O'Hara. ha

Every time I look at these blooms, I think of 'Gone With The Wind' and southern balls.

Its still beautiful all ripped up. Im just wondering, why did you do that? Im sure there is a reason I just can't think of one LOL!

My guess is #1, she wanted to count the skirts, and #2, she wanted to get a good look at her reproductive parts - anthers and stigma - to see how well they are formed (and if she's a good pollen producer) and maybe to collect the anthers for the pollen. That's why many tear into blooms of new hybrids.

It really does resemble a petticoat! Very frilly and pretty!

Carter,
You are correct :-))
Skirt counting.. and I wanted to see why my first crosses did not take.
I do not believe it was a problem with the flower.
Ripping the bloom showed me what I need to do for better success.

The Halloween I am sending you has a pod on it.
A very weird pod ..LOL It developed with the calyx on and is covered in warts. Probably because high temps and humid.
I took a pix today and will show it. It was next to doubles on the table while waiting to go off to you. It may have doubles in the cross.
Taking it out to send, I was shocked to see that. ha

Woo-Hoo! Can't wait!! Thanks!!

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

It's an absolutely stunning flower Alice! It's rare to see so many skirts open and not stuffed inside.
I can see where it would be tricky pollinating it. LOL

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

So pretty, ripped open or not. LOL!

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3a)

Very nice!

I learn more every day! Thanks Carter.

No prob... another reason is often with doubles, you can't get in to pollinate without tearing the flower open. I guess at times you have to sacrifice beauty if you wish to further it! ;)

wow layer on top of layer on top of layer. What a beauty

Thanks, Donna.
Your 'Tatiana' here is starting to bloom very beautifully now.
Much much better than it's first blooms :-)))

Very interesting Alice expecially for those who have never cut a bloom open. Did you come to any conclusions as to why the first pollination did not take? When you pollinate the next time, do you feel that you will have to cut it open to get it pollinated. It sure has many ruffles and skirts.
