but when the clock struck 2:30 am this morning, a little copying and a little a-pasting, and a few numbers: clack clicketty clack ....
*sigh*
I guess it's time for another plant shelf. I don't need more plants!! Even just potting up that box full of seedlings will take up a whole shelf!
so..... which books would like to move to the floor, you think? I should just give in a move to a new place with an extra room - for the plants!
and I was being soooooooooo good
oooh! I love it when somebody here gives in to plantemptation! So, spill -- what did you order??
:-)
Oh no Ki, books never on the floor...lol They go up the plants go below..splish splash...
ok sooooo the suspense is killing us...WHAT DID YOU GET??
MsC
I wanna know too :)
"They go up the plants go below."
I shall have this embroidered and hung above the shelves :-)
I was relatively good. Just 6 li'l plants :-) or was it 7... lol. The thing about that time of night is that I never remember the details in the morning. A chirita, and episcia...... All I know is that my (now annual) July hoya order has been placed as well, so I really didn't need this gessie order.
I did, however, stop myself from ordering a grab bag of orchid cactus cuttings (let's not talk about how much time I considered a 100 cutting special) as well as half a dozen pitcher plants (nepenthes). I still want the nepenthes..... and almost picked a noid one up today, but I *really* was good.
can you imagine what would have happened if I had clicked my way through that 100 cutting order? roflol
Haha.. yep late night shopping gets to me too!
you can always hang em from the ceiling.:)
MsC
I already have mounted orchids hanging all over the place :P
wish me luck with the chirita, folks. That genus is my nemesis.
Where are you ordering Hoyas from? I think I have a trade box on the way with some hoya cuttings, but if they don't "take" then I *must* order hoyas from somewhere -- I cannot spend another winter without them, LOL! I have new hooks in the ceiling, just waiting! :-)
I saw some photos of orchid cactus a while back, but they had drifted to the back of my mind.... I wonder if I would have better luck with them than with actual orchids? I recently managed to kill the last of the ones that I got when we were in Hawaii a couple of years ago. If I contact that nursery to order more orchids, I will make sure to take some lessons from Keyi & OrchidFancy before they arrive. I think DH is hoping my enthusiasm for AVs won't lead to obsessions with other houseplant genera... silly man.
lol. orchids are my first obsession. I am culling them down a bit though......
why not try some mini cattleyas? they take the same light as AVs. Or, ... well,... the list is so long, I won't start now.
If you've never been to Al's orchid greenhouse in Leesburg, definitely put it on your list of places to stop. It's probably the cleanest and best orchid greenhouse around here :-)
I have orchids in baskets, orchids in bark, orchids in semi-hydroponic setups (planted in expanded clay and sitting in an inch of water), orchids mounted on cork and on tree fern slags, orchids on sticks, orchids in dirt mix, orchids in lava rock, orchids in coconut husk chips, orchids in terrariums, blah blah blah.....
My difficulty with orchid cactus appears to be giving them a winter of sorts. I'm giving them another shot, though. I do have a some from trades which I will be doing my best to root, grow and bloom.
These hoyas are coming from aloha hoyas (I trust her IDs), but I've also ordered more common ones from Logees. I'm hoping by next year some will be big enough to start rooting for trades.

Are orchids pricey at Al's? One of the things stopping me from buying more of them is that they seem to be $20 or more.... I got such a great deal on the ones I ordered from HI, around $5 each plus shipping (might have been $20, which didn't add much per plant when I ordered a box of 10!).
I'll see about finding Al's regardless the next time I'm down that way, even if it's only to drool over the selection.... well, and maybe purchase *one*... I mean, as long as I am there... LOL!
The very best thing about Al's is what I learn from wandering around his greenhouse. I would never have grown phals well without seeing the various ways his are grown.
One of the things (sizes) at Al's that is a steal is are the mini compots of phals. Three seedlings for $9 - can't beat that anywhere. Some interesting species and hybrids too.
Phals are his mainstay (he breeds 'em) and they are the healthiest around. I swear by his bark mix - seems to last a couple of years more than others. Some of his other plants are a little pricier... as with anywhere, it's good to have a sense of the market price. I will say, though, that if his catts are newly repotted, it's worth the extra..... His slipper orchids are healthier than most and priced around the middle of the competition....
For cattleyas and dendrobiums especially, hawai'i and florida are well-priced. I love H&R in hawaii for healthy cheap and VIRUS TESTED plants. Oak Hill has excellent prices on seedlings of species.... I have my favorite sources based on price, selection, type of orchid, and health. I buy mostly seedlings, and rarely buy any orchid that costs more than $20. Most are probably between 7 and 15. (Ok, I have a weakness for miniature species that go for about $18....)
Two plant events this fall! The DC area gesneriad society should be having their sale (I hope, think, guess....) and the orchid society's sale during Columbus Day weekend. I'll be doing my very best to hit both.
Edited because I can't write in sentences. And hey, I'm shutting down the computer before it turns 2:30 today!
