Hello All.
My Brugmansia insignis 'Gold' has had at least 30 tiny flower buds for the last three weeks, but they are not developing. They just sit there. I water it daily (but it freely drains), fertilize it with Peters 20-20-20 every third day, and have applied Messgener to it twice. It receives full sun from a southern exposure. What is it waiting for?
Thank you.
Erick
What's The Hold Up?
Hi Erick
Sure sounds like you are doing everything possible for your brugs. I looked to see what your weather is like and it seems really nice and warm. I can't tell you anything more you should do. Sometimes it's just a waiting game.
I have been known to do this. I have mistaken new leaves for buds before. Looking at the size of your plant you might be noticing leaves and not buds.
Here is a photo of a new leaf I thought was a bud at first.

B. insignis 'Gold' blooms in flushes. That is, that it has several blooming periods in the season, where it carries many flowers, that opens rapidly after oneanother. Between the blooming phases, the plant is building up a large number of buds, that remain small, untill they are plenty and when there is enough, the buds will grow large in no time and the flowers will begin to open ... does that make sense?
GardenGuyKin,
Thank you. I did double check the Brugmansia and I am pretty sure they are buds. I think I may just be impatient!
Thank you Tonny. I wondered if perhaps it was waiting to bloom in a "flush". I appreciate the advice.
Erick
Stop watching it, Erick. LOL. A watched pot never boils.
Just kidding!
Oh Kin I have done that too, on ones I can't wait to see. And then I go back and wonder where they went. LOL
You are taking such good care of your brug. What green leaves you have!
Erick
That is fantastic you have all those little guys just waiting to put on a big show for you. Tonny explained it well what is going to happen for you.
I hope your wait isn't much longer. It can drive a grown up bonkers!! LOL
Keep us posted.
Kell...LOL it also helps if you put your glasses on Too!!
Kell, I only look at it ten or twelve times a day....that's not unreasonable is it? LOL
Thank you Delisa. I have been fertilizing them every other day and they really seem to like it.
Thank you Kin. Now I am looking forward to a big show in the coming weeks. We still have three good growing months here, so I am optimistic.
Erick
Erick, Your plant looks so healthy. Mine seem to be eaten up by earwigs. I need to be more vigilant about fertilizing also. The days do get away from me.
Keep us updated c pictures, I love to see them all.
Marie
try backing up on the nitrogen just a little and my brugs seem to bloom better in a bigger pot just a suggestion as this is just my first year with brugs but I have several that are blooming well and I had read somewhere here in the dg forum to use a fertilizer with less nitrogen for blooming can recall what im using but I know i look for fertilizer with less nitrogen like 15-30-15
Thank you very much Marie. I will definitely post pictures!
Thank you, tednugent, for the most helpful advice. I will take it!
Erick
Erick says: I only look at it ten or twelve times a day....that's not unreasonable is it?
I wanna say, "Is that all???" I have no buds yet..... but I will have them eventually!!! Or else!~ I have a Peaches & Cream with many many many many nice variegated leaves..... last Saturday I bought a healthy looking Charles Grimaldi. I'm hoping for the best.
Sanna
Upees, also? They are very healthy and pretty!
Sanna and Erick, do not despair. They will bloom unless you have HG! And the good news is, once they start, they do not stop!
