How do I save the bees in my lawn?

Clarksville, VA(Zone 7b)

What do I do about a large (at least to me) nest of honeybees in my lawn? These are definately not yellow jackets and look very much like happy active honeybees so I want them to have the best life that MotherNature will allow. I do not want to kill them but the grass will need to be cut soon and my mower guy was stung last time. He says its either him or the bees. How can I save both the the bees and my husband and still have a reasonable looking front yard? The bees and I thank you for any information you can share with us.

There are actual specialists who relocate entire colonies/hives. How they do it is beyond me but there are people who have had them moved. I would start by calling any Wildlife Rehabbers that may be listed in your phone book. If none are listed, contact a local Veterinarian or perhaps a local Nature Center. They are out there, I've known people who have used them.

Please post an update if you find any resources. I'd be most interested.

Try calling your equivalent of a county extension agent. S/he will most likely know a local beekeeper who will be glad to come move your bees and all their stuff. The one near me keeps them on his own property and also local small farms (bees get their own territory and the crops get pollinated). Good luck!
