DIGGING BULBS QUESTION

Plano, TX

Do you have to dig up your bulbs in the fall? I live in zone 8 and have glads and elephant ear caladium. After the first freeze can i cut them back and mulch them for winter?

Lawrenceville, GA(Zone 7a)

How cold does it get?

The Gladiolus I feel will be fine with the extra mulch....they are at least 6-8 inches deep in the ground, right?

With the E.Ears you may be taking a chance and so would you with the Caladiums. Are they close to the house on the South side? If so, then your chances improve a lot.

Maybe some of our Plano area DG'ers have some experience with these?

Fort Myers, FL(Zone 10a)

what kind of glads do you have? Some are winter hardy and they would be fine! It is up to how cold you will get and the glads themselves.

Bessemer City, NC(Zone 7b)

Colocasia esculenta, the common EE, survives the winters here in 7b. Does best in a soil that doesn't hold water and mulching is a big help. Also a warm microclimate works wonders if you have one.

No one I know has had any luck with overwintering fancy-leafed Caladiums in the ground here.
