H. javanica vs. H. multiflora

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

I have just compared buds and blossoms of my H. multiflora and find it to be H. javanica. If anyone would like to do this, go to that MSN forum at this link. The photos are by David Liddle.

The managers on that forum, dedicated to truth, honesty, education etc., should object to this post as it IS in the spirit of all of us being better informed.

Caro.

I do have H. multiflora as well.

Question is, has Hoya javanica (Boerlage 1899) now been separated from H. multiflora?

As far as I know D. Liddle also says that there is a difference in veining of the leaves between the two.

I believe so...from what I can grather from DL on his post.

Carol, do you find that it has an early morning scent, as I have heard it does?

H. javanica? Mine doesn't... But then I detect a slight scent from cv. Ruthie....

Mark,
I detect a very faint scent in mine (late night/early morning). Do you suppose cooler climates have anything to do with scent?

Hmmmmmmmm????????????????????????????????????????????

Maybe... David Liddle said his are fragrant only in the very early morning. I don't have one now, and there is no way whatsoever I'm getting up at 5:30 am anyway. It is a real beauty though.

Welll, I admit to sometimes going to bed around that time ... and I have smelled a faint (barely discernible) floral scent when nothing but the javonica was in bloom. Oh, y'all are probably going to think I am nuts... but I have sniffed javonica blooms that have just fallen off the plant and there is a faint scent on those as well.

I've also detected a faint scent on mine early in the morning.

There is definitely a light scent to my H.Javanica flowers, once it's completely dark, and continuing until it starts to get light in the morning.

Mark, it looks like going to bed at 8pm and up at sunrise isn't going to help us. I will wait until mine gets bigger to sacrifice my beauty sleep.....

The alternative is to sleep with your hoya, which I actually almost did once. Ha Ha. Actually I hung it right over my nightstand so I could smell and admire it while the night breezes blew. Now I have some of them hanging right outside the bedroom window. (Any potential burgler would have a heck of a time getting to MY windows.),,Ha ha
