Hi,
My first brug (Jamaica Yellow) has bloomed! Very exciting for me but now the first flower is spent and hanging limp and sad. Do you remove the blossom? I wasn't sure because I know some of them set seeds and I didn't want to disturb that if it were going to happen.
The second blossom has opened and I've counted 6-8 more to follow. I will definitely be getting another one:)
Thank you to anyone who can help!
Do you remove the spent flower?
I usually remove mine because they start to look real ugly, but what the rule of thumb is I really don't know. This is only my second year with them. I'm not into the seeds anyway. But there are a lot of members who are.
Depends of you want seeds. If you don't, remove the spent buds. If you do want seeds, then, #1, if you crossed it with another brug or have another brug (of a different type) blooming, you might get lucky and get a pod. If you haven't crossed it or don't have another brug blooming, you won't get a pod. Brugs of the same kind (i.e. - this one, Jamaica Yellow, and any cuttings/clones of it) are self-sterile.
Now I'm confused. Do you mean if you have two brugs of the same variety they will fertilize each other? My understanding of self fertile is that a plant will fertilize itself and you don't need a second plant for fertilization.
Spent blooms are of no use to you or the plant unless they have been pollinated. All others can be removed, but let the spent one, in that case, fall on it's own. I think Carter is saying is that you cannot get seed pods by using Jamaica Yellow crossed with pollen from its own cuttings or itself. You need a different brug to cross to her to get a pod.
Thank you! Mine is currently an only child but I'm looking for another so maybe I can experiment a bit. Thank you all for helping me out!
When you do lots of pollinating you can have one ugly looking brug for a while. Right now i have a small EP that had 8 blooms. I attempted to pollinate all of them. Now she looks like a weed, with wet pink spaghetti hanging from her branches...not a pretty sight at all!! LOL!
