I looked through the stickies, and couldn't find an answer to this question - doesn't mean it's not there, just means I couldn't find it! (BTW - those stickies are HELPFUL!! Thanks, Milan, or whoever does all that work!!). Ok, back to my question - is there a good, better, best time to take cuttings from the hoya? For example, my hoyas are all putting on alot of growth (YEA!), so would this be a good time to take cuttings, or better to wait until toward the fall when it slows down, or maybe it doesn't matter?? Enlighten me, please!
Question
I have often wondered that too, Karen? But I haven't any answers except that I think when the plant is growing=healthy=energetic....? I also think that when you cut when the plant is active...it has a chance to make a good recovery with new growth before it slows down. But it is a good question....bet the answer is good too!
Cuttings always root better and faster for me in the spring & summer months, however, I never want to cut off any tender new growth either, so when one vine is putting out new growth, I try to find an older one near the bottom that isn't growing much or has ugly ol leaves that I wouldn't mind taking off. Ha. Besides the tender new vines never root as well as older "hardened" vines.
Once again, Mairzee-dotes has the perfect answer. It's exactly the way I would do it. I don't mind snipping the very tip end off of my new growth to keep them from climbing into my rafters but I would never try to root a cutting from new tender growth unless it was the last plant of its kind on earth...and belonged to somebody else and I just had to have a piece of it. ha ha

Thanks - I feel more confident with my scissors now!
I'll put this thread in the sticky for future reference :)
I usually only take cuttings as long as I see active growth on the plant, time of Year doesn't matter.
