Recently I bought some plastic freezer containers to use in processing this huge fig crop. When I unwrapped the package, I saw that the number inside the chasng arrows was 5. Since I was under the impression that only grades 1 and 2 were safe for food, I went searching and learned that the different grade levels have specific uses:

On that same note - a couple of months ago the supermarket had a sale on some nice-looking plastic pieces. I bought a pitcher for $1. It is sturdy and just the right size for making iced tea (two family size tea bags in cold water in the fridge for an hour. The Made in China sticker said "do not use in microwave" but it was only later that I realized it carried no numerical coding at all. I think I'll replace it. Better safe than sorry. Yuska
