I have been playing plants around here...taking some "suspiciously unhappy" plants that just are NOT growing out of their pots and checking the roots.... some because the leaves had light yellow spots, some because the leaves looked pale, some because they were just sitting there looking stupid.
Root Mealies!!! 9 times out of 10 they are there!!! I have drenched my greenhouse plants for them...but not the plants growing around the house.... It seems to always boil down to the roots!!! I pulled my big H. fraterna out of the pot and half the roots were gone....and the soil full of the mealies.... I should buy stock in Bayer for the amount of stuff I am using now....
It is a bad time of year for them now....so I am not going to take any chances with any of them....Bayer Drench all the way!!!
Carol
Guess what I found....
Carol, I am sure this has been answered, but I will admit to being lazy....what Bayer are you using to fight the mealies? Is it a liquid/systemic, and what concentration? I am always cautious about using products designed for other plants (like the bayer rose 3 in one stuff) on my hoyas, although I have thought about it. Thank you for your time and patience, and I promise to try to read past posts, I have read a bunch, but also am hustling about for the fourth.
My dog absolutely hates fireworks too. He will hardly go out to potty before he is slinking back inside. I have a boxer though who will stand right next to my son while he is blowing up firecrackers, and not even flinch......I would wonder if she was deaf except she comes when she is called. I guess it is all individualities.
Happy 4th
Sara
Sara, I'll answer if you and Carol don't mind.
Usually it is Bayer Advanced Tree and Shrub Insecticide (B.A.T.S. :), which is a liquid form that has the active systemic ingredient Imadacloprid.
Mixing ratio for the Soil drench 1oz B.A.T.S. per Gallon of water.

Milan, thank you, I really appreciate the time and patience. I have used systemic granules with pretty good success, except for a spider mite infestation on a ficus diversifolia - I think I may have won (granules and neem oil), except that I have caused a complete loss of leaves. If B.A.T.S. is safe, I may just go for broke on this tree and either totally loose it or win.
Hope everything works out for you Carol,
Sara
BATS has worked well for me....and we use it out in the gardens too. Except with the edibles....can't find a solution for that one.....
