If I set a leaf of a chimara plant; would the babies be sports?
I have Ma's Turn Coat and it is getting ready to bloom. I see no signs of suckering and I love the leaves. I think I am going to set a leaf from the plant and wondered what to call the little guys.
Question about "Sports"
Call him Jr. :)
Ma's Turncoat (9297) 11/21/2003 (O. Robinson) Semidouble chimera cream-white to blush pink star/blue-purple stripe. Variegated dark green and white, plain, pointed, serrated. Standard

Chimeras have to be progated by bloom stlak or sucker...
Good Chances are it won't bloom true , it might not be like Mom at all...
I have Little Stinker Chimera foliage plant...sucker has NO Chimera foliage, new growth and new sucker, NO Chimera foliage either...So even suckers are not 100 percent true of parents.
You could not really call it anything ~ It would be a noid..lol
As Chimeras are not supose to be progated by leaf..
But it's your plant you can do what ever you want ~
I Thought this sense all Ma's Chimeras are Sports already but I wanted to look it up.

Your welcome
maybe you'd get an baby Alliance ?
I think I would like to try. The leaves on this plant are beautiful. They remind me of Blue Boy's leaves except with a white edge. There is also a hint on pink in them. I'm going to set leaves and see what happens.
Nanna,
One of the prettiest plants I have is the one I shared with Jill...we called it Gunderoo Who...it blooms pink flowers instead of baby blue blooms. It is a happy little plant & better than some I paid for.
Sooo you just never know. See what you get we may all be begging you for one just like it.
MsC:)
Thanks MsC. I truely appreciate your response.
Since chimeras are a combination of two separate genetic identities, it seems to me that setting down a leaf should get you one or the other... and I think there's at least some chance that your leaf could contain tissue from both parts of the chimera and produce a "true" plant. Seems to me that the only way to know is to try it!
I don't know if the two genetic identities of a chimera are two named parent plants, or how that works exactly in terms of figuring out a name for your from-leaf offspring. I've seen references to AVs sporting or rather "reverting back" to a parent, so I'd think perhaps if your offspring matches a known parent of the chimera, you should be able to call it by that name. But there may be some convention of nomenclature to indicate reverting that I'm unaware of.
I put down some leaves of 'Rob's Humpty Doo' that somebody sent me, figuring that even though I wouldn't get a "true" plant, I'd probably get something I liked. I ended up with a blue-blooming one that I called "Humpty Who (noid)" and a white-bloomer that I called "Humpty Who Too (noid)." I just put "noid" on the label somewhere of any plant that I give an unofficial name to. I think I've sent out a couple of "Guessaroo (noid)" plantlets with a note that they are a pink sport of 'Rob's Gundaroo'.
I don't know what I will get but I love the leaves. I am hoping the the leaves will be constant. Still waiting for the "real" plant to blossom. The bloom stocks are coming but nothing has opened as yet.
