New Hoya score!

Mt Zion, IL(Zone 5b)

I took my 16-year-old daughter out-of-town to a softball tournament this weekend. (she goes from pink tutus & ballet shoes during the school year to softball spikes and ball diamond dust during the summer!) As all good card-carrying members of "Hoya Annonymous" do, I spent the time in-between games in search of hoyas. Made a couple great scores - for both me AND my sis!

We both got a nice big basket full of Polyneura.....

The leaves of both baskets of Polyneura have yellow SPOTS on them.
As a precaution, I have it quarantined.....but I'm thinking it's from either too much sun OR water spots.
What do you guys think??

There was only ONE basket of ....the EA tags says "SULAWESII" but I believe it to be .............Brevialata. (agree?) This is another one that I didn't have....and since there was only one basket, sis only gets the offer of cuttings. =0)

I also scored 2 huge baskets chalk FULL of "Curley Leaf Epie" ..... [one for me and one for my sis].............AND.........to passify my cactus & succulent addiction.....a huge basket full of "Dog Tail Cactus" and "Golden Rat Tail Cactus" (pictures to be posted on those forums).

I'm sure I was quite the site.....shopping cart FULL of seven hanging baskets....baskets in the cart, baskets hanging off the handle, baskets UNDER the cart..........as I'm racing up & down the isles of the garden center at Lowes, wild eyed and drooling, cell phone pressed to my ear, squealing to my sis at what I'm finding and saying "YOU WANT ONE?" "YOU WANT ONE?" hee hee I am a hopeless plant-a-holic!

OH - the REALLY FUNNY thing is.....I was leisurely eating a McDonalds ice cream cone when I entered Lowes. I'm nibbling on the cone part as I begin my journey up and down the isles.....and when I reeealize how much GOOD STUFF they had....I had to hurry and eat the cone and rush over to get a cart. I got SO EXCITED that I shoved the remaining part of the cone in my mouth.......and didn't realize until I tried to chew and swallow it that I HAD FORGOTTEN TO TAKE THE PAPER WRAPPER OFF! hahahahaha I was just SO EXCITED! =0)

LOL...Betsy, that is just too funny. We are such little kids when it comes to these plants, aren't we?
My polyneura didn't do well until I quit watering it so much and put it in a very shady spot on the North side of the house . Now it looks great. So mine definatly likes to dry out in between waterings and doesn't like much sun if any. However, I don't think it would do well in the interior of the inside either. It is in good light there, but just shady.
I don't know if that is what is wrong with yours or not, but you can try that.

Do I have the greatest sister or what??? She scored, so I scored!! The baskets are chocked full and beautiful!! Have my polyneura outside under a tree....(Oh, and while she was in the store on the cell phone with me, I kept hearing "Security to Houseplants, security to houseplants!!")

Mt Zion, IL(Zone 5b)

Hee hee Marcy - yeah it's amazing how we act when it comes to our plants. =0)
And thanks for the growing tips on Poly! She's out hanging under the tree right now.....gave her a drink last night so I'll let her dry out before watering her again.

....whatcha think, tho, about the spots on the leaves? Ya think it's sun or water? JUST HOPEFULLY NOT SOME FUNGUS OR SOMETHING. Don't want no FUNGUS AMOUNG US! =0)

Oh Sistah B, I would have given almost anything to see that sight! With all of that excitement I'm surprised you just didn't eat the paper wrapper:-).

There is a fairly common fungus called cercosphora...if the leaves also get a bit bumpy it could be that. I spray regularly against it (loves damp humid places) and certain hoya are prone to it. Not a real menace...but spray it well according to directions on the bottle and quarantine it just to be sure....at least...that's what I would do.

Great finds! And, just think of the wrapper as "fiber," which is important of a balanced diet.

Dianne - yes'm....I was laughing at myself. HOW COULD YOU NOT?!?!

Carol - I will double check (sis, when you read this, check your Poly too) and see if these spots are "raised" or bumpy. But I'm thinking no.....just yellowish Spots. Hopin' it's just sunburn or something. Thanks for the tip tho!

Ann - LOL! FIBER! hahaha

When mine had yellow on the leaves was when we left for vacation it went without water for almost a week and when we got back I flooded it everyday and made matters worst until it straighten up..I find it's a hard one to grow! But none the less it's a large full basket, hopefully it stops yellowing,I would remove the leaves and spray it for fungus none the less better safe than sorry..Dianne

Hi Betsy...Yea, I tripped over this whole page that I had never seen. I do have an answer for you on the plant you say had the label H. sulawesi. This is incurvula and not brevialata. I think Dale Kloppenburg made the determination that it was brevialata but has since corrected his error after he saw it bloom. Technically the label that said sulawesi was about half right. It should have said an "unknown species from sulawesi". When these plants are collected and it is unknown what they are, they often arrive as just a species from that place (in this case sulawesi) I believe it's a better method than putting just someones catalog number on them. Of course the species from such and such a place can also be confusing as there may be 5, 10 or more that just say "species from "wherever". I personally think it's better to know where a plant came from than to have a number that can change with every nursery that gets ahold of it and sticks their own number on it. I've seen enough confusion in this genus in the past 20 years to make me physically ill and I do believe it's getting worse instead of better.
