Bulbs Im having fun with
Somebody get a clamp to help Wallaby1 hold her jaw and tongue from landing on her keyboard tomorrow morning when she sees these.
They are all so robust and so full of substance. How big is your Sprekelia?
Jazzy pictures, Chris.
Kenton
Very cool specimens!
Thanks for the compliments .. the sprekelia is around 4-5 inches .. my first year with them ...Im very surprised at how pretty it is
Chris
Kenton I heard that!
I have A fargesii, not yet flowered, I am pleased to see it does look like it's pictures, or even better!
A speciosum I got one of last year, it was big, and rotted!
And yes, I do have the sprekelia, it is a fun thing to grow! 4-5" sounds small, I didn't measure mine but I'm sure it was much bigger than that. I would have said at least 7" tall.
I am waiting on A. tortuosum also new last year, I thought it would rot but is still alive and trying to grow, not yet surfaced. It was a huge bulb, perhaps it's tricky in settling down.
Got my eye on more this year!
Chris, do you have any more Arisaemas? nepenthoides is one I am dropping my jaw for! Then there is sikkokianum, kiushianum, elephas, etc etc...
Hypervenilation preventing device: £.50 (also sold as a paper bag)
Wallaby1-
This is my first year with Arisaema .. I have already lost one Speciosum due to rot and my big guy in the picture is a good 3feet tall. I am hoping I dont kill them all !..
the species im growing are
Arisaema consanguineum
A. Speciosum
A.tortuosum.
A. Fargesii.
A. costatum.
A.Tryphillium(sp?)
A. Grifithii
A. Draconitum.
I am going to see how I handle these guys before I buy anymore. Have you grown any other Aroids.. like Amorphophallus, Arum, Pinellia, or Dracunculus? Some nice species out there that do well for us in non tropical areas.
Chris
Chris, I have had A consanguineum for a few years now and it gets through in a cold greenhouse, this is it's 3rd year in flower but it took a couple to flower. Pics in PF.
A. ciliatum also, which offsets easily and flowered first time this year, I took out 10 small bulbs early this year, bigger than it was when I got it, it was a tiny white bulb as if seed grown. In PF also.
A, griffithii I put in the ground and it was absent for 2 years, had 2 leaves for 2 years, then disappeared again last year and this, perhaps I'll get a spathe next?
A griffithii ssp Pradhanii new this year, it had one big leaf and nearly made a spathe, it's in a big pot, pic of the bulb in PF.
My A fargesii is only growing now, it's still quite small.
I sowed a seed mix of Arisaema a couple of years ago, around 6 sprung up quickly then died. I put the pot in the greenhoue and another grew later, it's getting a shaped leaf on now that looks like A. candidissimum.
Amorphophallus I have been revving up to try, not yet done it. I would like to try A. paeoniifolius, konjac would be another.
Dracunculus vulgris I have, pics in PF, also on the summer bulbs thread.
Arum creticus is one I wouldn't mind trying, there is one with spotty leaves but without checking it's a while since I've seen it.
I also have a pic of Sprekelia in PF.
You have done well to get flowers/spathes in the first year, they often need to settle first, or mature!
I am luck to know a person who sells great bulbs he imports from India..a great guy.
too bad you dont live in the states .. i would love to send you a bunch of amorphophallus Konjac bulbs .. once you get a few they multiply like mad.
This was also the first year for flowering Dracunculus for me ...Horribly awesome smell !! beautiful plant.
Any tips on the sprekelia ?
Happy growing
Chris
I tried a sprekelia a few years ago, and kept it in a pot in a cold greenhouse. It happened to be a very cold winter, and it almost survived but rotted. In pots they can freeze easier than in the ground, as it goes from the sides, and can be wetter too which doesn't help.
This one I got from a serious seller and grower on ebay this year, he grows them further north than I am, where it will be colder, in raised beds with lots of sand incorporated. They are supposed to be hardyish if grown in a microclimate where they will get enough sun to ripen them in summer, stay free draining and dryish in winter.
If grown in pots they should be planted with the neck at soil level just sticking out, but in the ground deeper, I think 2" below but not sure if they can go deeper. I took a smaller extra bulb off of mine and am growing it separately, I will try one against my south facing wall as that is protected from too much wet and is sandy soil, as well as getting heat reflected from the wall. They should preferably be kept quite dry in dormancy. First make a space! I don't want to try the mature one, and would like to get the other one bigger first, so it might be a case of yet another plant inside over winter!
Over here is OK, I have done it, and if you would like some small Arisaema ciliatum then let's do it! A little knowledge is all that is required.
Perhaps when the season is over we could trade for some tubers ... all my stuff is in active growth at the moment .. But it would be awesome to do a trade with you.
Lets keep this in mind for fall
Chris
Yes Chris, that is when I thought would be best. Early October here is generally the bulb time, or earlier for some things.
It is a great way to get different and healthy stock.
janet
