Plant ID please!

Longview, TX(Zone 8a)

My mother-in-law initially thought this was a weed but when I pulled it up, I think it's clear it's not. There are no buds or blooms and we have no idea what it is. The leaves are similar to lantana but without the lemony scent. Any ideas, oh wise ones?? =o)

It looks like some kinf of Salvia, but i am not sure, how large is the plant?

That might make sense...I have 4 salvia nearby...maybe they seeded?? Here's a full shot. There were 2 of these, side by side.

It looks like Pineapple Salvia, have you smelled the leaves?

I think "not weed" and I'd put it in a pot and see what develops! Maybe it will be a bit easier to identify with some good healthy growth.

I did thinking it was lantana, looking for the lemony smell and don't remember any distinctive smell but I'll try again. I take it the leaves smell like pineapple?

Yes, but very faintly, they bloom in the fall and they are very pretty.
Here is a picture of mine last fall.

That is really pretty! I'm not sure where they came from. She swears she didn't plant any and the garden hasn't been taken care of in 3-4 years until this year. Maybe they were seeded in another plant we bought. That's happened a couple of times this year. I like it when you get a surprise freebie!! =o)

Well, I hope it turns out to be something neat, even if it is not Pineapple Salvia.
Good luck with it.
Josephine.
