Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

i just got one of these and have now read that some people in certain parts of the country have a hard time growing this one. why? i live in north texas, zone 8a. will it live in clay alkaline soil? does it like more water or less? thanks for any information. barb

I have never had a problem growing stuttgart the only problems I have heard of are burning on the leaves. I grow mine in a bit more shade than other cannas but besides that its a great grower.

Barb, any all green shoots need to be thinned out or sometimes it will revert. just cut the all green stems at the top of the soil. A moisture holding soil is better add some potting soil to the area of the garden you are planting in will hold moisture improve drainage both canna s need. And little fertilizer... shade at high noon and water water water but don't keep WET. Just moist.

I have six growing in pots of Promix. I water them a couple of times a week. The leaves seem very long and several have broken off in light wind. They have a bit of streaking to them but definately not variegation. Mine are getting morning and early afternoon sun and look healthy so what gives? Where are my stripeds?? LOL

Any I have purchased locally in packs have the same growth habit but not the white like my original clump.I got mine from a botanical garden in the begining so it has lots of stripes. When stutgart spreads the rhizomes have long sections between the eyes, unlike most cannas. Its not a real wind resistant type.Always tall and kinda lanky.

You are such a tease Kyle! If I had color like that, I would not whine at all. LOL

The variegation can be lost what happens is green plants are stronger growers and when left out side over winters the white streaked forms get over taken by the solid green leaves. I have had plants out side and inside and can tell a major difference over the years. It is believed by many that stuttgart is a variegated form of Canna Omega that was discovered in a botanical garden in stuttgart germany. All I can say is that some forms are much better than others and cutting the good sections away and repotting them will yeld even better variegations. Though solid whites will not grow. Good luck.
