does anyone grow this canna here, esp. in north texas. i just got one and now have seen that it may not grow just like any other canna. apparently some folks in the country can't grow this one. does anyone have the scoop? thanks. barb
canna stuttgart
my problem with it has not been about growing but rather whether I had the correct rhizome or a healthy rhizome. Some of my plants are mostly green and some others seem to have some kind of rust in the leaves. The shape is longish, like stuttgart, but no markings whatsovever. I conctacted my seller and he has rectified by sending replacement rhizomes. I will report here is these grow with the beautiful variegation I expect.
If what I've said above doesn't apply, then you should grow Stuttgart fine in your zone, maybe with some shade, so variegation doesn't burn to a crisp.
thank you. have you heard other folks saying it won't grow for them?
nope.
This canna will not thrive in a high heat and high humidity climate. You may be able to keep it alive, but it will always look a bit sickly. Also in our intense sun, the leaves tend to scorch and have brown streaks along the whiter variegated portions along with brown, crisped edges. I moved it to a shaded location but it didn't retain it's striking variegation and wouldn't bloom in shade. Over all, not a good canna for southern climate, or at least that's been my experience.
Crowllli, interesting info about Stuttgart. Come to think of it, I have never seen a stuttgart in anybody's garden around me. I have all my cannas in part shade, and none have bloomed. I don't care about that, as I got them for the foliage. Australia, Bengal Tiger and Tropicana.
I do have a gorgeous one I got from Kachersky canna, Ermine, a white dwarf, and that is in full sun. should be blooming shortly and you bet I'm gonna brag.
well mine is in the "shade" if you want to call it that. still looks o.k. doubt it blooms this year. i do like the foliage. and vossner that is a pretty canna. did you like dealing with those canna folks? thought i might order prob.next year. barb
I have some cannas in shade too and they don't bloom well. The most vigorous bloomer I have is Tropical Paradise. It really puts on a show.
mama, Kacherski canna is highly regarded and owner is a DGer (abutilion aka Alice).
