On 5/30, I put a leaf down from the Golden Autumn AV I bought for my mom at a recent AVSA show here in central NJ. To my surprise, when I got home from work last night, I found a baby!! Is this unusual? To go from bare leaf to root to baby in less than a month??
I have had other leaves down for almost two months, and only have a few babies from them. I know most of the leaves are very well-rooted, because I transplanted them into a different soil mix on the same day I put the Golden Autumn leaf down.
Is it possible that because I trimmed the leaf that it put more energy into rooting and developing a baby? The leaf was actually an older outer leaf that broke off when I was watering. Part of the leaf itself was damaged, so I trimmed off the bad part, and figured what the heck. Might as well put it down and see what happens, right?
I'll try and get a picture tonight.
Stephanie
Super fast from leaf to baby???
I would not say it is unusual . But exciting ! Great growing congratulations with your new babies !
They say the average time..then many start before and after for different reason we may never know all. One can be the varieties.
I let my babies get pretty big and good root system before I take them from Mom so from the time I put a leaf down until it goes in it's own pot can be 3-9 months for me.
I've had babies pops up in a week or two and had babies pop up in 4 months.
Happy growing ! I'd love to see pictures !
The Golden Autumn plant I have grows very fast as well. Maybe its just what this plant does. I got a small plant when Jill and I went to VG in May I think and the plant is now at least 10 inches across and is blooming for the second time (with no additional fertilizer)
Nanna I think you posted it's picture ! Sure is beautiful. It's a wasp right ? Wasp bloom that is.
It's a very pretty plant and the yellow center is true yellow. The color is more true in the first picture.
Steph, you will love this plant!

My mom's Golden Autumn is not quite as big as yours, Nanna, but it does seem to grow fast. I bought it for her in early May and it has doubled in size already. It bloomed continuously through early June, and now seems to be taking a breather. I don't think it will be long before it's ready to bloom again, though.
Since it was an older leaf, it will be interesting to see how many babies come out of it. The more I get, the more I can share!
Stephanie
It seem to be a good plant for me as well. Lots of blooms nice spaced over the plant. Good luck with you leaf.
Congratulations, Stephanie! And Nanna, that plant is just *stunning*!
I had a few "ears" pop up in 4 or 5 weeks this last round, and after 6 weeks nearly all leaves have eared, but I think 4 weeks is still the shortest time I've managed here. I do think it shortens the time to cut off the tip of the leaf and also not to plant the leaf stem too deeply.
Spring is really the time to set leaves. March is the perfect month.
Thanks Jill. All the plants that I got from VG this time are doing very well. Ness Silver Cypres is just getting ready to bloom. It's taken the longest and is the slowest grower.
Yup I remeber when this plant first came out I always wanted it. Not sure why I never did buy one. hhmm
I does have Wasp flowers !
THis is VG sats but ever sense it came out it has been known as Wasp flowers
GOLDEN AUTUMN (Lyons) Pale yellow "wasp" stars, singles, with heavily fluted edges. The flower eye shines with a darker yellow blush. Medium green, standard foliage serrated and quilted
Oh happy day! I've always wanted a wasp and didn't know I had one. Thanks, Allison. I love the serrated leaves. The quilting has not yet fully developed but is coming.
Edited to say: I never even looked at the write up on the plant. It was in bloom when I saw it. It made me happy, so I bought it. Two surprizes in one!

I have a leaf of Celery down. I watch it closely hoping is doesn't die and gives lots of babies.
