New this week at Dave's

New Caney, TX

I'm new here and have been looking around and doing lots of reading. I know I'm with a group thats as crazy about begonias as I am. (some of y'all may be worse) LOL My problem is that its not just begonias for me. I'm into Hoya's, Bananas, EE's, Plumerias and all kinds of tropicals. Begonias and Hoyas are real bad right now. I made a special place for several of my begonias yesterday. They were on the porch railings and we had a storm blow through and many were knocked off and I had a bunch of busted pots and Begonias. I'm hoping they will be safer now.

Welcome Tami. Beautiful grouping of plants they all look so healthy. Sorry to hear that you had a storm and your plants/pots got damaged. Hope they all bounce back quickly.

New Caney, TX

Datdog,
Thankyou. I hope they all do too. They tend to be like babies and Pets. You can get real attached. LOL

Hi Tami! welcome, some of us here are on the yahoo group as well. All your begonias look great!
It's hard to limit yourself to just one addiction isn't it!!

New Caney, TX

Begoniacrazii,
Yes one addiction is hard. I can't stay out of the yard. Always something to do. We bought the 1/2 acre next door because I need more room. LOL

Tami

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh now I am so jealous!! I need more room desperately. I tried to buy just a bit of next door but they are too close to a sale to get all the needed city paperwork done. I am bursting out here.

WELCOME to Dave's and welcome to the Begonia forum. We are trying to get this forum in gear so we can all gush continuously!! LOL. Your collection sure will make us all gush.

So glad you joined us here. I too have multiple personalities, begonias being the dominant one this month!

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Oh my, what a beautiful collection!! WElcome too.

I made a mistake and bought two of those baker's rack type shelves but so many of the begonias are too tall to go on the lower shelves, I should have just gotten the ones intended for plants where each shelf below sticks out further! They would make awesome dispalyes for my growing collection.
So keep those images coming!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Sue, as if anyone but us begonias geeks want to look at them.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Well, thats' why she's here, she found the geeks!!

Kell and Sue, LOL Looks like I found Begonia freeks for sure. I bought a new one yesterday. Its Matchmaker. Very pretty angelwing in a hanging basket. Allen just shakes his head at me. :-) I think he knows I can't help myself.

Tami

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh Tami, we can't ehlp ourselves, can we??
We need a picture of your new family member.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Ok, I went and found her Matchmaker here http://absastro.tripod.com/hkey/hpiccane_lz/MatchMaker.jpg

That is, after I spent a LONG time drooling over all the other images! Ladies, there are some on here we NEED to find!

Tami, we all know that 'head shake' you speak of. When ever my 'plant' friends ask where my DH is and why he doesn't come along on plant trips or to the conservatory or arboretum I just tell them 'Oh he doesn't do Plant Speak with the Plant Geeks, he only does Sports.'
Then I get that all knowing 'Ahhhh, I see' response.
I think the exception to this is Chris_Lorry who's husband DOES Plants! Imagine two in one house. What a dream! LOL

Matchmaker is a beauty for sure!!

New Caney, TX

Sue,
Is that a picture of Cracklin Rosie? Oh and thanks for finding MatchMaker. I lost that site in a hard drive crash and am glad to have it in favorites again.
Kell, I can't seem to help myself. I tell myself that I need to quit but I still come home with them. :-)
Begonia crazy,
My husband is a plant guy too. His weekness is mainly for plumeria. We went to Hawaii last year and came back with a good size box of cuttings, We are ready to go again in August. He loves what I do in the yard he just hates that I bring home the ones that I have to put in the house for the Winter. I have a Greenhouse and a sunroom. My bathroom is almost unusable in the Winter. We dig all our Plumeria trees up in the Fall and because of Allen's work I had to do it all myself this last year. By the time he got home it was dark. We have over 100 that we plant each Spring. Some are over 9 feet tall now. He just knows I make lots of work for myself. You should see him at a Plumeria sale though. LOL Oh and here's a picture of my MatchMaker.

Oh Tami, that is a beauty! Yes, that's Cracklin' Rosie.
You are so fortunate to have a DH that has a plant passion, but I bet you know that! My hubby knows that I am a plant nut (not hard to do, he just looks out the back door and shakes his head) but he knows that I enjoy it so rarely says anything other than an occasional"Don't you have enough plants already?" to which I give my standard simple answer "NO!".
Oh and a couple of weeks ago he said he hates plants, really hurt my feelings (not hard to do either, I am hyper sensative these days) but he meant it in that he's jealous that I pay attention to plants than to him. Sheesh, I think his imagination is running wild, I have no idea what he's talking about! Really

Oh but Lali, you would then fight over who got to spend the plant budget and also the room budget. Who gets to say where each plant goes? I do not garden well if I have to share. Unless I am the boss and the other the digger/weeder and cleaner upper. LOL

Tami, I just started liking plumerias. They are easy to acquire. I am in trouble.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh Sue, my DH has told me many times how much he hates plants. But I have got to tell you I understand why. He did not choose to live this way.

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Oh Tami you're the lucky duck! My dh tolerates my addiction(s) With one caveat. 'Please don't put plants on this one small square foot of kitchen counter so I can make my coffee in the morning, that's all I ask'
Well we all know how this story ends! Just about everyday he has to clear a postage stamp of space on the counter - but he still luvs me!

Sue, no such thing as 'Enough Plants' LOL.

Kell, Dh is a great digger/weeder and cleaner upper. He's a great gardening partner (and kayak partner for that matter!!). Just could care less about Latin names.

I just started back up with some plumies I received from another Daver. Just took photos tonight since they are budded and leafing out. (a real feat for me! since the others were lost in a freeze a few years ago)

Here's b. Escargot tonight. (never mind the writing on my hand. we went to a movie this evening and I grabbed a sharpie out of my purse to write down the web site.)

whoo hooo, that is one huge leaf!

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

It's two leaves I think but they're squished together - major big double sinus curl on this gal. But still, even one is huge. My batteries are charging or I'd put a few more on. But I can share this little bug-a-boo that I found on my Impatiens balfourii

what a couple of late-night left coasters we are!!

I think Tami is an hour ahead of us otherwise she'd be on to us running off with her thread! She might as well get used to it! LOL

Ok, there is a begonia in here, a pink blooming one there, richmondii I think.

nice pots Sue!

Is the top one I pointed out impatiens arguta? (or an impatiens at all?)

What about the bottom left. And I spy with my little eye, something that looks like 'Crocodile'

Thumbnail by begoniacrazii
Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Well, good eyes Lali, it could be impatiens arguta, I lost the tag somehow when I potted it up.
Not sure about the other one, I have had it for years, it's deciduous and comes back every year. I think it's latin name starts with an L. here is the closeup of the bloom.

Thumbnail by Calif_Sue

is it Lysimachia? Now that I see a close up of the flower that's what it looks like.

I have i. arguta, but I think there are two forms. One came from Emerisa. We grow the other at the arboretum.

and lookie at this bloom! Penny

Yes, that's it!!
Here's a closer shot of that pot, a begonia trying to grow between the big leaves

Sorry to hijack the thread Tami, I'll get back on topic. Here's one that has no name, I call it 'Freckles' for obvious reasons.
This is one of the few I grow in my house. It seems so happy here that I just leave it alone.

Joolz, you out there? Do you know who this one is?

I have this shrub for 2 years now, it was tagged Ginny but that's supposed to be a white bloom so no idea what this is.

What a cutie pie Penny is.
love the amaterasu (it's an upright jointed cane type?)

Just lost my Little Brother Montgomery. Well not totally but it's in ICU right now.

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

It looks like Ginny. Ginny has fuzzy red on the blooms.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

great show Sue. You have some great ones.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Gone all day, went with DD and family to SF Zoo, where I took lots of pics of the animals for their scrap picture books and of, what else, plants to add to the PlantFiles!

Yes Lali, amaterasu is an upright jointed cane type

Tami your MatchMaker is stunning ! Love it ! Where were you so lucky to buy her ?
I'm wishing for your plants to do great. I feel once they get adjusted they will be back they way they were before !
We like the Plumerias too. My hubby loves gardening ! He has everything growing out side like weeds. He tend to them well . The African violets, Begonias and so many other plants he has growing outside grow bigger, bloom more their the best looking plant we have ! We both love gardening !

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I forgot to mention sweet Penny. What a great shot! She really is a darling dog Sue!

Looking at all the begonias on here, has pushed me to be a better caretaker so I have started repotting mine. I am shocked at how many I have when I gathered them all on my back porch. And I have some great ones too! I am so happy!

New Caney, TX

You Gals sure were busy yesterday. "Ran with my thread". Is that something we are supposed to get our nose out of joint over? LOL
Sue I love your 'Silver Jewel'. potted plants are great too. Oh and the curlie haired puppy. What a sweetie. Beginia Crazy, I think I have one of your unknowns. I'll try to check later. It looked lots like 'Maria's Revenge' but then not.

I noticed that begonia too on Sue's husband hates plant post. I love it and I need is ASAP! I love yours too Tami. I need to get out more to find it. LOL

Oh Lali girl, I just enlarged your Escargot pic. WOW. Your leaves looks like Kristi's infamous picture of this one. I just finished repotting mine yesterday so maybe I too can have a big happy one. What is your secret to such success. Is it in your GH. I have no GH, woe are my begonias.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

OK, I'm back Tami, gotta correct a name for begoniacrazii.
Lali, that one in a pot that I said was amaterasu, I was wrong, don't know why I didn't just read the tag closer.
This tag says, if I can read it right B. tauoaniana, which I bet it wrong but it's hand written.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Tami, PlantFiles needs your images, be sure to include them as you can!
(you too Lali!)

Sue, could it be b. taiwaniana?
Did you get it from the big spring sale? We grow it at the arboretum.
