My new Hoya Obscura has buds(what do you call them in the Hoya world) I'm real excited. I just bought this cutting off ebay a few months ago. Its happy and growing well.
Tami
Hoya Obscura
Oh! My! Gawd! Tami, that is beautiful (note to self...must get one).
I call 'em buds too (but, I think the thing they are hanging from is a peduncle - pronounced pee'duncle).
You clearly are an awesome hoya grower. I can't wait to see the blooms.
Ann
Lovely plant, Tami. Do the leaves have a red tint?
Shirley
Very nice, Tami... H. obscura is a real favorite of mine.... beautiful plant.
Carol
Oh sigh... Don't look Susan another blooming obscura... Mine has still yet to even grow a peduncle, but she is a purdy plant. Really pretty Tami. Note to self find obscura with peduncles.... Ebay ya say ??
Tami F - I'm with you - I have a beautiful obscura - with NO sign of a peduncle!! Sigh....But nice growing, TamiXWP!!!
Karen
Very Very pretty :) Way to go lady!
Beautiful plant Tami. Can't wait to see your blooms.
Patti
Yes, beautiful....from yet another person with a beautiful Obscura plant with no signs of blooms.
Oh yes! I agree with everyone else - - VERY VEEERY NICE!
Mine has been a blooming fool off and on the last couple months. =0)
Good growin!
Yall are hard to keep up with on this forum. LOL
Thank you Ann,Shirley,Carol,TamiF,Karen,Lorry,Patty,Nan,Christine and Betsy.
And Shirley it does have red on the leaves. This plant was small when I got it. It has grown like crazy. I have them all under the trees on our Prison Table. They seem to like it there. I have had two of the new ones I bought on Ebay bloom. They had no sign of Peduncles(strange word) LOL I have another one that I've had for years that's growing like crazy and I looked yesterday and it has loads of Peduncles too. Almost at every place the leaves are. I put some fertalizer on them when I potted them up and thats all I have done. Here's a picture of a closer look.
Tami
TamiF is right....don't look Susan, LOL.
My H. obscura was living in a plastic bag under a flourescent light. Got it healthy again and potted it up. Two weeks later the leaves are feeling leathery, and NO ROOTS again.
I dug a hole beneath my pecan tree. Stuffed the cutting in and watered it. Live or die.....
Prison Table?? What is that?
Great pics Tami. Good growin. Don't you just love that smell on obscura?
Marcy
I've been worried over mine. It had rained every day for sometime and I thought they were getting too much water. Every time the rain stopped I'd run out and empty the pots. My Polyneura doesn't look good but the others are all fine. We even had a storm blow down one of our big oak trees and it landed on the plants. Two babies which I had posted on Ebay were blown off the table. I was in tears. My husband tried to help me find all the pieces. The tree fell on the hanging rack he had made me. We had just put all the hanging pot on it a day or so before the storm. Maybe they need to be beaten to do well. LOL
Tami
Absolutely BEAUTIFUL! What an awesome collection you have!
Kim
Tami - WOW AND WOW!!!
Wowowowowowowowowow...Miss Tami I do believe you have me drooling. Did you say trade? LOL
Beauties one and all darling :) and it seems they love there location :)
Well it looks like more than there are there I think. The cuttings I have rooting are in the middle of the table. I've had the big Carnosa's for years and just never really paid them much attention. Most I have gotten on Ebay a few months ago as starts. I did find a Kentiana, SP. Sulawesi and a Tsangii at Home Depot and Lowe's this year. I have looked high and Low at Angel Plants all over the Area for new ones but haven't found any more.
Tami
I have a tsangii or DS70 from angel and have seen kentiana around here but those are the only ones I have seen. They dont' seem to send out a lot of hoyas!
:(
I I did get some cool lipstick plants from angel plants and some syngoniums :)
I'm runnin' a little behind on posts here but ....WOW, Tami! Gots ya a few hoyas there, do ya?! =0) VERY nice collection! Bets
Lorry,
I got a lipstick plant from them too. It was a basket and I was charged a dollar something. It did look a little tired but its really looking good now. I heard they have several different hoyas but they are hard to find here as well. I do HD and Lowes runs as often as I can. Just hopefull.
Tami
I JUST found a beautiful Hoya Hindu Rope at HD in Maine. At first I bought the basket of Lacunosa they had. Foolish me tried re-potting it (there were pinch bugs in their soil) and the Lacunosa went into shock and died. I can't seem to grow a Lacunosa at all! It has cost me over $40.00 to try on several different cuttings and now this plant :( So I took the dead Lacunosa back to HD and exchanged for the Hindu Rope. We are getting a Lowe's built across the street from HD and I can't wait to check out their garden center. I have heard such good things about it. The garden center at HD really makes me mad sometimes with the way they let their plants die (but that's a whole nother story in itself *lol*)
Kim
Well Kim I dont' know about the Lowes they are building there but here..OH MY GOD...they KILL everything! I stopped even going there to look!
Hi Tami XWP; About your first question of what we call our buds on our hoyas. Yep, we call em buds too, but their placement reminds me of the old song (anyone in here old enough to remember this?) The knee bone connected to the hip bone..the hip bone connected to the back bone..the back bone connected to the shoulder bone etc. etc.. The buds (which open into the flowers sit inside of a calyx (a cup of sorts that holds the flower encased in a wrapping until it opens out to display the flower inside). This calyx with the flowers inside is connected to the pedicel (the flower stem), the pedicel is connected to the rachis (the very tip of the peduncle), and the peduncle is connected to the leaf nodes (where the leaves grow from) which appear on the branches. Whew! that's a lot more answer than there was question..so on that note, I'll just say beautiful plant and you will love H. obscura. Also glad you got the bronze leafed clone, some remain green and never turn red no matter what you do to them.
Ann Wayman
Nicely put, Ann. I am going to copy that down so I don't forget.
Ann
LOL out Lowes just KILLS everything ..so I stopped looking
Our local nursery always has variegated carnosa (the rope kind) and krimson queen.
I also got my HUGE kerrii albamarginate there!
But all in all hoyas seem impossible to find!
They usually have LOTS of ivy and ferns!
Hehe (as i sing along with Kitty)
I am 34 and I know that song :)
Ann, Thanks for the explanation. I'll try to get it all straight. I need to run out and get another picture of the Obscura. I think the flowers are open.
Tami
You will LOVE the obscura flower :)
Ooooh, Tami. That is cute! I didn't realize the buds were so tiny.
Ann
They're gorgeous Tami. I'll have to be satisfied with enjoying yours....I could not get mine to root.
Sandy
They are tiny, but they have a mighty smell. Ha. It smells like Fruit Loops cerial.
Thanks all. I have not smelled them yet. I will make a point to in the morning.
NiteOwl2, Sorry yours didn't root. I hate loosing plants
Tami
Obscura must be one of the absolute favourite hoyas of mine. It's fragrance is the best, though!
Christina
I'm so jealous - 8 Hoyas and not one blooming! I've ordered another 10 though, and I'm hitting some nurseries this week. I'm determined to catch up with at least some of you. Hope my orchids don't suffer from separation anxiety - guess I'll have to make sure I spend some "quality" time with them while I'm satisfying my Hoya addition. Never seen any at HD or Lowes here, maybe I just don't get there soon enough.
Ginger
Ginger you may end up having to order by mail after you get the more common ones. Most of the rarer hoyas aren't found in the garden centers.
However, you do live in Florida and there are several big nurserys that sell hoyas there. Bob Smoley has his Gardenworld nursery there now (that address needs to be changed in the sticky). Also, the guy that sells on Ebay as Cowboyflowerman has a big nursery there called Secret Garden, and Chris Durham (sells on Ebay as Greenemann) is in Parkland, Fl. He also has lots of great hoyas to sell.
Those are all good sourses in Florida of some of the unique and different hoyas. Plus there are hoya sellers you can order from here on this forum. Check the sticky at the top for lists.

Ginger, I think your orchids will get along magnificently with your hoyas - especially your cattleyas, epis, vandas, etc.
I want to see pictures when you put all your different plants together and make a fabulous jungle out of them!!!
Ann
Thanks Marcy. Parkland is the next town to the north. I'll be on the lookout.
Ann- I have a special area built in my pool enclosure for the orchids. It has a bit thicker screening so that it doesn't get too much sun. It's also misted. I have 50 or 60 there, the blooming ones get moved to the pass though to the kitchen so that I can enjoy them from inside. I have about 15 hanging in trees, but I may have to move them in - the iguanas like them too much. We have three particularly pesty iguanas that live in trees on the canal behind the house. They eat my veggies before I can get to them, love the orchids and hibiscus. For some reason, they stay out of the butterfly garden - probably because it's too close to the street and they don't like people. The paphs I put under the roof of the patio - which is where I have the Hoyas. It rains too much this time of year to ever have them dry out a bit unless they're under the roof. I do have a couple hanging in baskets lined with that coconut stuff - an experiment. They seem to be doing well.
Thanks for all the help.
Ginger
