Help with id

Walhalla, SC(Zone 7a)

Hi gals!
I need your help if possible. I got this hoya about 2 years ago in a trade, and i still have no clue what it is. It has never bloomed for me and has been so far a slow grower. It has long big skinny leaves. I can take a close up of the leaves if that helps.

Any ideas?

Here is a better shot of the leaves...

Looks like H. meliflua ssp. fraterna to me. Mine has big banana shaped super long leaves.

I agree with Marcy. This is just about the only hoya that can be identified by its leaves, because they are so different than the rest. I think H. meliflua ssp. fraterna is a safe bet for a name. Here is a website where a person has managed to get one to bloom: http://web.telia.com/~u11310155/galleri.html at the site click on the "H. meliflua" name on the left side of the screen. When the thumbnail photos come up you can click on them to see larger versions.

They really are slow growers. Where do you have yours sitting that it has gotten as big as it has? Mine seems to sprout one leaf once a year.

It sure is pretty even without a bloom though :)
Thanks so much for sharing :)
and my no Ids..I love them just as much as any of the others.
My red No ID plant..I am still not convinced is DS70 so I am dying for it to bloom!

If the margins are recurved you can be pretty sure it is what Marcy ID'd it as....I think.

Maybe i shouldnt be complaining about the growth, it was just one stem when i got it, i guess it has done pretty well. I have it on my back porch, it gets full morning sun, and then just bright light after about 9am. Here is a photo of my porch, it is the one in the corner. Most of the hoyas love the porch but the right side, i hardly have any plants on, it gets really hot full sun

Ok not to sound dumb but what does recurved mean?

Lorry, the cutting you sent me of your DS70, did look just like mine just redder! I cant wait until you get it to bloom too!!

SCShopgirl, that is one awesome back porch!! I would love something like that.

I believe "recurve" means to curve downward or backward :-)

Thanks Ann...Hmm they dont curve very much any way...Maybe a little bit backwards..

Gawd...I LOVE that porch. I want to go out there & sit with my morning coffee. I can even hear birds singing off in the distance. Where did you find that gorgeous backers rack in the corner?
What is that one hoya to the left of the photo in the redish pot (the real full one)?

Thanks Everyone! I just love it!!

Marcy,
The hoya in the reddish pot i think is a hoya australis. It has pretty big leaves too thou. My parents actually owned a gift shop for a long time...hence the name shopgirl. and the bakers rack was one my mom picked up to display with in the store. It has lots of pieces that match it. 3 plant stands, a corner rack and another flat rack. It is sooo heavy.

Here are the leaves on that plant.

Will you adopt me????

Walhalla, SC(Zone 7a)

Sure come on over Karen! we have plenty of room here!! :)

Yes, that does look like H. australis. I think there are several clones of that one kind that have the smooth leaves with some of them having much bigger leaves than others. The one I get from Kartuz's nursery has those big leaves, but is more cold sensitive than the one with the smaller leaves.

Did you see the movie "Shopgirl" with Steve Martin? Good movie.
Marcy

hahah. No ive never seen that one. Is it good?.have you seen You've got mail? The girl on there owned a bookstore and her online name was shopgirl..Yup i stole it from there really!

Hoya australis ssp tenuipes, i believe is what was written on my id tag.

RECURVED......here's a picture of new leaves on my H. meliflua ssp. fraterna. I notice only the new/young leaves are "recurved"...they seem to "flatten out" as they mature. True for everyone else or just my hoya?? =0)

p.s. LOVE your porch, Jaimee! I see where your new babies I'm sending you will live, huh? =0)

Your absolutely Right Betsy!! Now u know they will have a good home!!

Ok ...now i'm going to have to go home and inspect my new leaves. I know the old leaves are not very recurved, but the new ones may be. I thought that was just something they did when they were new..learn something new every day !!

Double ditto on the porch! Lovely, serene area and gorgeous plants. They evidently love you as well!

Walhalla, SC(Zone 7a)

Thanks Susan! The feeling is mutual with my plants!!

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Hmm maybe it is then SC :) I don't know..My TS70 has MUCH larger leaves then that :) LOL but that can depend on growing conditions and right now we haev perfect weather for hoyas.>HOT and humid!

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

If you ever want more...let me know :) I have quite a few varieties of that also :)

Walhalla, SC(Zone 7a)
