New Here on Dave's and How do y'all root cuttings?

New Caney, TX

Hi all, I am new. It took me so long to give up the $15 to join. LOL I think you have the best hoya group on the net. In searching I would always be led to Dave's but couldn't read the messages. Well now I can.
I got interested in Hoya's last year when I traded with someone on another site that had several and wanted other plants from me. She sent me the nicest rooted plants. It really blew my mind. It was one of the best trades I have ever gotten. Anyway I have been hooked and have bought several off Ebay this Spring and I just got some cuttings in another trade. It was a great trade too. Real nice size cuttings. I hope I don't loose them.
How do y'all root your cuttings?

Welcome Tami :)
Could you be the Tami I spoke to in email?
This is a great group of people! I think you will have a load of fun here :)

I usually root the larger stemmed types (like Kerrii) In soil and just keep it moist..actually I do this with most of them :)

I have heard some say they have great luck rooting them in water :)

and someone will need to explain the baggie tricks to ya (laugh) I have not tried that one yet!

You have a very pretty kitty cat there :)

New Caney, TX

Lorry,
Yes I'm the same Tami from that dreadful hoya group. Just reading here I learned more in one day than I have from that group in several months. Its just a different atmosphere. No one acts like your taking their glory. LOL anyway it seems like a real nice group and I'm excited to learn more.
I have a Kerrii rooting now. I put it in rootone and put it in a clear Plastic cup with perlite. I worried that they might not root and I was gonna dip them in dip n grow and I took it out of the cup after three days and it has roots already. I was shocked. I have severl others rooting and I hope they are as easy to root as that one. I heard that different ones root faster than others. And thanks for the welcome.
And thanks for your nice thoughts about Sabastion. He is a brat.

Tami

Tami:
Welcome to Dave's! Girlfriend, this will be the best $15 you've ever spent! Everyone here on the Hoya Forum is WONDERFUL and so knowledgable. We have Pimpettes and Jedi Masters and friends in Sweden and ev'rthang! =0) We have even recently been joined by someone who writes for a very well-known hoya magazine. So this is a very diverse and fun group. Catch up by reading past threads - you'll learn alot (and LAUGH ALOT too!).
There is a thread that specifically addresses rooting cuttings. Many methods to try.
Again, WELCOME ABOARD!! You have just stepped off into the Dark Side of the Hoya Addiction - - there's no going back! =0)

Hello and Welcome Tami!!! You won't find a nicer bunch of addicts no wheres else!!! I recently went threw something in my life and I am still amazed at just how incredible these women are!!!! You will enjoy this forum so much...You will find yourself making all sorts of room for your new hoya's,you will run out of room and will still be getting more...Until you find yourself having to touch dirt everyday!! It's all down hill from there!!!

Welcome!!!

Dianne

Hi Tami and welcome to Dave's Garden hoya house. Come in, kick yer shoes off & read awhile. Ask any ol thing ya like here, we do not get upset over ANY questions, spellng errors, or referrance to other vendors.

The others are sooo right about this addiction. Once you get a few hoyas, it seems they somehow communicate to you that they want more of their kind around & first thing you know, you got hoyas "comin outta yer ears."
Ha. ...or trying to get into your ears...they do sort of reach out & grab you sometimes. ;-D
Everybody roots theirs a bit differently it seems, so try different methods & whatever works best for you is the way to go. My neice uses dark colored bottles & just water. I found I was rotting more than rooting that way, so I use the perilite in little clear cups with holes burned in bottom method. You must keep them humid however. I have an old small aquarium I put them into & half cover the top & keep that in a North window (no sun on little cuttings). This time of year, it is easy to root most things. Just pot em up, keep warm & wet and in the shade.
Have fun.

Hi Tami and welcome!!

League City, TX(Zone 9a)

Hi Tami, we are practically neighbors. Yo Patti and Kim, look......we have a new local hoya addict in the making.

Welcome to the forum.... love the kitty photo. Funny how most of us hoya growers also love cats and dogs too.

Let me know if you are interested in a plant shopping day in Houston. Kim, Patti and I have been trying to find time to plant shop and have lunch. I have a couple of places where I can find hoya locally. Usually it's pretty common stuff but occasionally I get lucky. Found a nice 4" pot of H. imperialis once.

Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)

Woohoo..Tami..hoya multiflora is one of my all time FAVES! nice photo selection :)
I just recently acquired the variegated one also :) It has such a NEAT flower :)

Omaha, NE(Zone 4b)

Glad to see another newcomer, Tami! Like you, I've been on Dave's off and on for a few years as a non-paying member. GW has been awfully quiet lately so I paid my dues recently myself, and boy am I glad! Lots of activity over here!

And, BTW, I adore your kitty, too. I can see he's quite a character!

Denise in Omaha

Long Beach, CA

It's easier to post pics in here than on GW. I read there all the time too, but like you said....never as much activity going on there as with all these addicts in here. Ha.
Now we need to get Leon to join in here. (it was his original trellis idea on the fencing ones). I tried to email him, but when I clicked on his name over at the other forums, it went to some forbidden zone or error or somethign. Anyway, didn't get anywhere, and I have heard that if you mention other forums or certain people on GW, that you are subject to being booted off...so I wasn't about to mention it in a message form. Oh well, maybe he will find it on his own.

~~~Waving Hello and Welcome to Dave's Garden Hoya forum. I would love for all us to get together and do plant shopping and lunch. It will be a blast.
Patti
Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)
LOL..mentioning certain people or pages gets you booted there?
Sounds like another place I know :)
I was recently booted off another forum for mentioning Ms Pimpette!
Some people take themselves too seriously (wink)
Dianne, Marcy, Kabob,Night Bloomers, Denise, Thanks for the Welcome. I hope I didn't miss anybody.
Lorry,
that is the Vareigated Multiflora. You can barely see the white around the edges. Post a picture of yours I would love to see one with more white if yours has more.
Sabastian (our Cat) is a brat. We love him though. :-)
Marcy,
I too root with perlite in small clear cups. I potted up a Kerrii cutting Thursday and Monday night I was gonna dip them in Dip n Grow (I had only diped it in rootone) and it already had roots.
Nightbloomer, Let me know when y'all are ready. I live in New Caney (which is a bit North of Yall) But I would love to get together and shop. The only place I sometimes can find Hoya's is at Home Depot or Lowes. And they are plain ones. I don't have my graddaughter on Mondays. That would be the best day for me.
Welcome Tami-----Good people here !!!! Have fun getting to know your Hoyas and the people ....Sandyc
Welcome Tami, glad you made a financial investment in your hoyas' futures. You'll find tons of info and us hoya addicts are just a little on the zany side of nuts, so we have lots of fun too.
While I visit that "other place" occasionally (as CanadianCeedub), its just not the same. I got totally confused wih the picture posting method and gave up trying.
I root in water, and as soon as I see roots I pot it up and put a plastic baggie over it for about a month.
Christine, on the Canadian shore of Lake Ontario
New Caney, TX
Thanks for the Welcome Sandyc and Christine. You guys are all really nice. I feel very welcome. Thanks.
Christine, I never could figure out how to post a picture either. It's very easy here. Y'all might get tired of mine.
Here's a picture of sabastion Gaurding the BBQ pit. He's a mess.
Oh yes :) On second look I see that! Silly me :) I would have to look but it is far from the most variegated of my plants :) So it may not have more :) and sometimes it shows up even less in photos.
New Caney, TX
Lorry,
Ok, I was worried. LOL
Tami
Vero Beach, FL(Zone 9b)
Lol..no reason to be worried!
New Caney, TX
Carol,
Thanks for the welcome again. LOL I am really enjoying all of you. Its a nice forum. And no crabbies. :-)
I will be in Oahu in August. Are there any good places there to buy hoya's. Do Hoya need a photo cert or just barerooting? I wish we were gonna be on the big island so I could visit you but we will just be in Oahu. Even still I can't wait. We have so much fun there.
I bet I have looked at the photo of Sabastian at least ten times today! The kitty is just too cool! I can only imagine what kind of horrible planet this would be without the love of our animal friends to help us stay sane! Sabastian does look like a total nut case.....
