H. tjadasmalanguensis IML 1181 blooms

Chowchilla, CA(Zone 10a)

OK, so I cheated on this one. I won this off e-bay from La Pimpette with buds already forming, but I can't resist sharing the pretty blooms anyway - it smells good too. Also, I noticed some other peduncles forming some blooms, so hopefully it will be the summer of the never-ending tjadasmalanguensis bloom.

Ann - DAHling...those are incredible shots!!! May I use the first one? You are so accomplished...I am impressed. We have to arrange a teleconference for you to teach me how to use my camera....

Gosh...with you, Kukana, Christina...allof the wonderful photographers on this forum... HOW LUCKY CAN WE BE?!!!

cAROL

Did you use any special lighting for that one? The bloom on the left has such a glow.....

Ann, absolutely great photos! I know this one is a tough one to take photos of! I know I should use my tripod but it's too much work to set up.

Thanks so much!! I am really trying to get some nice shots with these gorgeous blooms.

I used two diffused lights on either side (about 1 foot from the bloom), with a white bed-sheet behind the plant. I used my supermacro close-up and had the camera on a tripod. I always use the timer because even if I have the camera on a nice steady tripod, because when I depress the shutter button the camera shakes (apparently I am a real brute - a bull in the china shop, if you will). With the timer function the camera has stopped vibrating from my pressing the button and I get a good, clear shot. Oh, I also have a secret - Adobe Photoshop - that program really allows one to enhance the quality of the picture.

Carol, I will send you the photo via e-mail, if it is too much to download I will mail it to you on disk.

Oh Ann~ Ditto with what has already been said. I looove the reddish tips on the flowers!! You sure you don't moonlight as a photographer?!

Wow...I love those rose tipped flowers. Do they smell good?
Ann, if you don't moonlight as a photographer...you SHOULD.

Such a beautiful flower and photo Ann. I need to read up a little more on my camera. My photo's don't turn out anything like yours :(

FYI
I just on another forum that we have been spelling the plant formerly known as an H. macrophylla incorrectly. We have been spelling it H. tjadasmalanguensis, but the "u" should not be in the name. The correct spelling is apparently H. tjadasmalangensis.

Hey Tami, somewhere I have a list of settings I keep my camera for the up-close photos. Those settings are probably pretty universal for most cameras. I'll try and find it for you.

Thanks Ann, Yippee saves me from reading the manual...

Chowchilla, CA(Zone 10a)

OK, Tami. Here are the settings I use to get close-ups of the blooms:

ESP - set on the icon of the box with the dot in the middle
Macro - the icon that is the flower (my camera has a supermacro setting that really lets me get close-up)
ISO - 100
Timer - on
Flash - off (unless you have poor lighting)
AF Mode - SPOT
Focus Mode - AF
F-Stop - 8.0

I always use RAW or SHQ (super high quality) for the card settings, even though it sucks a lot of the memory in the card up. I do this because it gives me really large picture files that I can "tweak." And, I always use a tripod to get the best focus. Finally, I put a white or black sheet behind the plant so that I don't have the unsightly mess that is my house in the picture...

I hope this helps a little.
Ann
