Since I discovered P. Pink Princess ,I've been Philodendron mad learning as much as I could . I was at a new amazing nursery in Ft Lauderdale and discovered this guy hiding under a bench, one the owner really didn't want to part with as she had received it as a gift from a man (now passed) who brought it back from indonesia
The color is just amazing almost a silver turquoise.
I've been looking for some info on it and after much searching found some sites with references to it althought there seems to be some confusion over the name. My leaves dont seem to be as long as the ones in the pictures.

My New Philodendron
DL
Do you know what name it goes by, do you have any pictures,is it climbing or Terrestial?
I wish I had a friend who'd give me rejects like this LOL
Thanks Neil
Celt very nice! Good for you! Don't have one :-(
that is a pretty plant, celt! i'm just getting into philodendrons myself since i bought a prince of orange that i just couldn't pass up. (i'm not sure what the other one is, it was just pretty and cheap!) i've wanted a pink princess for the longest time. i found one on e-bay, only to find out they can't deliver to louisiana. you can get away w/anything over here...but we won't allow a pink princess! LOL let me know of any secrets you learn about growing these!
Ashley
My local Garden Centre has 4 pink princesses right now but
not a whole lot of pink on them. Havent learnt many secrets , just that you should remove as much non variegated leaf as possible and I think they require a little more indirect light than usual. Ive been inching mine into the light and it seems to respond better. I also got one on ebay but the peice i got was not worth the money.
I thing I paid $40 .
If your looking for somthing cool search Tiger Fern , like the one in your pic only variegated and smaller.
ouch! $40.....i've done that more times than i care to admit. and still continue....can't seem to learn that lesson. did you get the pink princess on e-bay? which one are you exposing to more light? the taller one in the pic w/variegation starts flopping at the first sight of direct light, but always starts to perk back up when shaded again. (i've held out as long as possible, but the tropicals are now taking over the front yard because it is almost completely shaded throughout the day. kind of the holding area for my whiners until i can get more shade in the back.) do you know the name of the variegated? i did read that my prince of orange's leaves will start out orange and as they mature they turn darker. does the pink princess do the same? thanks for the info, i will definitely check out Tiger Fern when the sun goes down. don't want to waste my daylight...too much gardening to do! :o))
I have P.glaucophyllum, however I think they is a small leaf one and larger leaf one. mine is small right now so I can't offer much more.
I have the Prince of Orange and the leaves do start our orange and turn darker. My pink princess didn't make it. Not sure what I did wrong.
I have several philos and recently purchased painted lady off ebay. I think I have about 15 now. Definately my favorite plants.
Ashley
I got one small PP on ebay and it hasnt done much growing , another (getting more light) I bought locally) and is doing great.
Im not sure of the name of the variegated one you have . The PP leaves start off a copper color with shading (if its a variegated leaf) and then turns Dark green and the shaded part (if any) turns bright pink.
Another favorite is Gloriosum
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/592400/
funny you should mention gloriosum.....i went to my favorite local nursery monday and bought several of their new varieties not knowing much about any of them. i have it so backwards....buy it, then learn about it. but i got so excited when i realized one that i had bought was 'gloriosum.' yours are beautiful! mine is still very small, in a 4" pot, but seems happy. i definitely want more.
others that i got that you might be familiar with are a. 'aurora,' which i'm really excited about. its veins are white with pink stems. the white should become more pronounced with age (like the gloriosum i'm assuming). if you don't have it, you might want to check it out. i also got c. 'nancyana.' i don't remember what it's eventually going to look like, but i told them to show me anything with some variegation.
i also ordered a. cuprea on-line. i'm waiting for that to settle in. i think i let it get too much sun because there's some browning of the leaves...i hope that's all it is. i'm keeping them all in bright shade for now.
BTW, do you have any climbing philodendron? i'm watching one on e-bay that looks really cool. i'm building a pergola in the back and thinking about having something philo-like growing on it.

Here's the newest addition to my Philo Addiction, it's called P. Zulu Prince.
I potted it with my Silver (P.glaucophyllum) and they seem very happy together.
It turns very dark with more light and has a new leaf coming out which is a very deep pink/burgandy colour.
I just got another on Ebay from Brian Called Raising Sun it's bright yellow. Can't wait to see it.
I dont have any climbing ones in my collection yet as we're planning to move soon , I'm happy with the self headers and concentrating more on color contrasts.
neil, that is so fine! dark foliage is my absolute favorite...those two contrast nicely.
i remember looking at raising sun...very cool plant. you'll have to post pictures of it when you get it potted up. i knew this would happen, but you aren't helping my case of 'the regrets.' i spent the last few days in new orleans and hit a couple of nurseries there. well, i passed up this bright neon green philo. it would have looked so good with a darker one. oh how i hate this feeling!
you're thinking about moving!! i hope you plan on taking your plants with you (and i hope you are considering your plants happiness...nothing above a zone 8!!.) your yard is sooo pretty. whoever moves in better not take credit! LOL
P. glaucopyllum is a climbing philo, though, it's also somewhat slower growing. There are several silver/blue varieties, and supposedly, there is a difference between 'Silver Sword' and 'Silver Queen' - that difference being (if I remember this correctly) that 'Silver Sword' does not develop the back lobes, but stays pointed at both ends. I don't know that for fact, just what I was told several years ago when a friend gave me mine. I have two of the silver/blue varieties. I'll try to get pics here soon and post them.
Carter, Ive been trying to pin a name on the pale green one and its still am not sure. but I love the color, would love to get a bluer one too. I had a new leaf on my Sword/Queen when I repotted it but I left for 10 days and while I was away it either fell of or something ate it, I was so @#$#! off when I got home. But it looks like there's another one coming.
I can tell a philo additction is headed my way- I have been resisting, but it's like a storm getting closer and closer....
Hmmm... bet you don't live far. I might have extra... ;)
Really-? I have a whole nursery of fun things growing. I'm in the Heights...where are you?
Randy
Ironically in a twist of "it's small world"- I met the guys who own zone9tropicals last week. They live right around the corner from me and hand delivered some plants I ordered..Including a huge Jade vine we .hung out and chatted for a while..
Rj
A Jade vine, ...........Ive only seen them in pictures....you always have the greatest plants RJ what color is it?
I'll take a picture -- it's the turqoise jade. The old growth is dark green, but I noticed the new vines coming out have a chocolatey brown look.
I need to photo it for my journal tomorrow, now that it's stopped raining
I have always loved the odd philodendron froms these silver looking forms have always be a interest to me. I have recently found that P.glaucophyllum is not a true name but more a hulticultural name as Dr Croat says. I do have one form that looks much like the one you show pictured but also a long narrow leaf form that gets leaves around 1 to 2 feet long silver in color and my newest addition is one with narrow silver leaves but no back lobes so it looks more like a spear. I had been told it existed but every time I had gotten one it was just a juvinal form of what is called P.glaucophyllum. Talked to a collector friend and he had collected some in the wild and fully mature no lobes just narrow spear like leaves. I have it growing now to almost maturity and its the real deal no back lobes. Really hard to find usually but just as impressive.
OK Brian,
So do we know what I actually have. Im just calling it my silver one for now.
So can I be first on the list for the first offshoots of the silver ones LOL ( well actually Im pretty serious) I love this color. I did recieve my Raising Sun today, thank you very much. It seemed a bit tired but Im sure it will perk up in a few days. Can you tell me more about the Yellow color. It seems more green right now and I'm hoping the new leaf emerging will be a nice yellow.
Well as far as I know P.glaucophyllum is a form of hastatum which has many froms. The problem with ID many philodendrons is their are so many froms in one species that can look totally different. This is manly because they seed in the wild and each seedling can be unique some very unique and different.
As for your Yellow philodendron I got it out of a trade with a friend from Japan years ago it gets leaves around 2 feet long and in full sun will be a super bright yellow color. As the leaves fade they will get white or green depending on if they are in shade or sun. WIth the yellow forms I find that full sun or very bright shade is best to bring out the most color. In my greenhouses they are under 50 percent shade so they usually are not as bright as they could be. The newest leafs are usually the brightest Plant it in a nice size pot with a totem and in bright shade and see how it does. They love a lot of water and I root most up under mist.
Thanks Brian
I'm a big fan of yours. Keep the new ones coming. Silver Philodendrons especially.
Hey, RJ, I'm in the Meyerland area (Westbury). Not too far from the Heights (but a little more than spittin' distance).
