Texas Weeds: Please Identify...

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

I do not have a way to post pictures but I can describe the lil' scoundrel.

It is low growing, fast growing, almost clover like leaves with thin reddish runners with these leaves extending from. When you go to pull it out you must do so gently so as not to break the delicate runners, reaching around to find the one root this spreading plant comes from, when you pull it out it oozes a milky white sticky substance.

If you can identify it for me I may be able to buy the right weed killer. Thanks so much!

Sounds like spurge. Is this it? http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/8569/ Broadleaf weed killers or Roundup will probably work, though I usually just pull it since I like to stay away from those. 20% Vinegar might work. I can't remember for sure if I have tried my vinegar spray on it and if it worked.

sweezel,

good tips for killers....but i have to be careful on the vinegar, it'd kill the surrounding grass to. it might be that spurge, thank-you for the link! it looks similar....but i am thinking the leaves on my red stemmed weed are smaller.

another weed to identify:

it grows a couple inches (then gets mowed so may grow taller?), it has ferny looking leaves (about 1" each leaf) and it's so cute, when you touch the plant the leaves fold up tightly!!! when you try to pull it out you'll find the root is very strong in there and the stem of it about as strong as a piece of string so you need to get a good hold so you don't hurt your hand while pulling.

The one I have also has smaller leaves, but the stems are less red. It looks exactly like this...http://twig.tamu.edu/ground_spurge_euphorbia_prostrata_P6270005.JPG

The only plant I know of like that - with leaves that close when you touch them - is Sensitive Briar. It also has fine thorns, kind of like blackberry vines though. http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/62772/index.html http://home.att.net/~larvalbugbio/sensitivebrier.html

There is also another mimosa native, mimosa strigillosa, that's leaves fold up when touched. It doesn't have prickles. The common name is powderpuff. They have neat, fragrant blooms. They do have bristles, which are not prickly.

You are both so helpful, thanks!!!

I loved that last link sweezel, run your mouse over the picture and it shows what it looks like when you've touched the plant! So cute! But I've never seen any thorns or flowers on it....but we mow pretty often.
