Caren HG is notorious for having corky bark. I've personally seen it on two big plants.
This is a not so great picture of Native Habitat's big tree. Susie had it on her big plant that was in her TN greenhouse. Lot's of other people have reported the same corky bark on their HG's.
This cork does not seem to affect the growth or health of the plant. With or without the cork HG still rarely holds buds or shows mature flowers. I don't remember that anyone has ever said the cork spread to or contaminated their other brugs. But on very rare occasions other brugs do get it without HG even being in the collection.

So the darkning may be the cork just starting to form?

Highly likely. When in doubt keep it away from your other stuff for awhile. If you don't have any problems with wood ooze, or sores, or new growth die back then more than likely it will be ok.
Don't give up on it just yet. Did you contact the person you got it from to ask if their mother plant has cork?

When mine showed this...Out it went...but hey thats just me..

I agree it's not pretty but thank goodness it hasn't proven to be deadly.

Caren, I have to agree with Vee8ch, that if this cutting is HG it probably is nothing to worry about. Yes, it is ugly, but I have found that it does not affect the growth or blooming of HG. I even have it on Desiree, but HG has it worse. Both HG and Desiree both bloomed for me last year. Just remember that HG and Desiree take 2-3 growing seasons to put out blooms, at least that has been my experience with these two cultivars.

I'll try to post a picture of SB when I get the chance, the real disease that you need to be concerned about.

Thanks guys for all your input but I think I really dont want to take a chance. I can get another cutting another time. I just can't risk the rest of my brugs! I also have Desiree and it looks just like Vee's pic. The HG cutting looks black in some areas so I have laied the poor thing to rest double sacked and out with the trash. I just have too much $$ invested to loose my plants.

I don't blame you Caren for getting rid of it. Cork is one thing but black icky is a whole nutther story. :)

Caren, I can't blame you either. Use the motto of "When in doubt, throw it out".

Even if they look healthy keep them away from your other brugs. You don't want to learn the hard way like I did.
