How to stay cool in the heat

Benton City, WA(Zone 6a)

Since its so hot in Washington right now I thought I'd start a tread on how to say cool in the heat. Any ideas?

SAGE,
AIR CONDITIONING!! Or walking around for HOURS in stores that HAVE air conditioning, "shopping". lol

If you don't have air conditioning putting a sprinkler on the top of your house works great, along with keeping all the curtains shut and keeping all the lights off. When we lived in Yakima we didn't have an AC and I use to keep the windows open until the air in the house was the same as outside.

But I'm sure all of you have AC.

Issaquah, WA(Zone 7a)

Check out the computer in the basement which is at least 20 degrees cooler than upstairs.

Take the dog to the creek which is at least 10 degrees cooler and has ice cold water in which to soak hot, tired feet.

Refuse to cook anything that involves the stove or oven.

Albany, OR(Zone 8a)

Wash the outside windows! Spray yourself every so often with the hose. LOL
I just washed the windows yesterday and it was kind of nice to do in the 100 degrees weather.
But with it being 107 degrees today, that is a different story!!!!!!!!!
I am outside watering everything again!

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

It was 107 degrees today? Now I KNOW I was miserable!

Issaquah, WA(Zone 7a)

Are you kidding me Carol? 107! I would have been doing anything but washing windows or moving much at all unless absolutely necessary. The hose sounds like a good assistant to have at the ready though. What a wonder you are!

We topped out at 95 and that is plenty hot for me.

Albany, OR(Zone 8a)

Nope, according to the weather report, it was 107. Today it was up to 102 this afternoon and it was even hotter I think.
I can't stand being inside when it is so nice out so I decided to wash the windows.
You at 95 sounds pretty hot for Seattle area tho.
Pardalinum, am glad to help you know why you were so miserable, LOL

Olympia, WA(Zone 8b)

I will be calling the men in the little white coats for DAIS, who thinks that 102F+ = "it is so nice out". Meee thinks DAIS has had a bit TOO MUCH solar radiation on her brain!! hehehe

daisyruffles, I was happier when I thought it was only around 98 or so. Ignorance is bliss you know...

Albany, OR(Zone 8a)

Cute, blue
I actually don't like that hot of weather!
But I try to make do.
I have a/c now in this house so it does make it easier to sleep at nite, so I can handle the hot temps during the day.
Yes, Par, I was so suprised to hear how hot it was.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

The hottest I heard it was today was 103°, but I what's a few degrees right? LOL After 100° everything is miserable. I'm so glad we had central AC installed a few years ago.......it was only 72° in my house all day! >;o} I planted 18 daylilies today.....had to stop when it was 2pm and 95°.......my kids helped me stay cool by shooting me with super soakers while I worked!

Olympia, WA(Zone 8b)

MGH,
You are SO LUCKY!! Was 80F INSIDE the house at 10pm, Arrrrgghhh!! Starts looking for virgins, indians to do rain dance, or a rainmaker, any links appreciated.

It's still 90 in my house right now...

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Arrrrgghhh!! is right, blue. I feel for ya in the hot house. It was like that when my oldest was a baby. His room stayed so hot all night, all he slept in was a diaper. I didn't trust to leave his window open at night. We got a window ac put in our dining room after that, but now nothing beats the central ac. Sorry, don't have any links for ya though.

How is the humidity where you are at? That makes the heat even worse for you all on the westside of the mountians. At least on the eastside its mostly dry heat, even though our paper's website said the humidity was 75%. I find that hard to believe.

Daisy did you wash you windows in your bathing suit? I try to keep as covered up as much as possible. I do wear a short sleeve shirt however. Not like when I was young, bathing suits were my summer constant.

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

I always wear a cotton long sleeve Tee shirt and soak it in water every hour or two and I stay actually cool. It also keep the misquitoes off me. Also I wear a cotton hat and keep it wet. Those water absorbing neck things work pretty great also. Yes this is the first year we are overwhelmed here in Montana with misquitoes. You guys are so lucky in the Pac NW. 88 F yesterday over here. But it got down to 55 F last night. Oh sailing is good for the heat too.

SOFE,
Do you stand up in the bow and yell out, "I'm Sailing, I'M SAILING", lolrof. I would have KILLED for 55 last night. House did not get BELOW 72, even WITH ALL the windows and doors WIDE OPEN and the FANS GOING FULL blast!!! What a MISERABLE night!!

Yes when I'm sailing I sing and yell like a Siren. I often hook up my tiller so I can steer from the bow and do my Titanic thing. People passing on motor boats wonder how I do it. Yes Montana is hot in the day but here in NW montana we have cool nights due to the mountains dumping cool air the minute the sun sets. We often sail on these thermals.

KALI,
I have some kin at Georgtown Lake, 6500ft elevation. VERY NICE about midnight, lol. I got bit by SOMETHING BIG there one year, drew blood on me, took weeks to heal, :(

I never swim in Georgetown lake. It is well known that there is a big "Nessy" waiting to devour anyone who does. LOL It is a beautiful area and I often ski near there. The Pintler loop is quite beautiful.

West Richland, WA(Zone 7a)

It was so hot today my husband didn't even want to ride his motorcycle. I suppose to stay cool I could grab the family and head down for a swim in the Columbia River but even on a day like this it is still a little too cold! I think we'll head to a friend's house tomorrow who has a pool. A dip in the pool and a cold drink. Perfect......

SOFE,

That was the last place I skied.

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

Yes thats the place. Nessy = Loc Ness Monster. Or well known to Montucky the Georgetown Pirana. LOL I skied there when there was 18" of powder and had a ball. Nobody on the slopes. The back side was awesome!

Port Orchard, WA(Zone 8a)

It's nice and cool at my place, since I have second growth Doug Fir and Maple and Cedar. when I moved in in 1980 all my friends and family wanted me to cut down the trees. I said no way. that what I bought it for. it's on days like we've had all this heat that I'm glad I stuck to it. stay cool, hostajim1

Benton City, WA(Zone 6a)

Hostajim1,
My sister and hubby live in your neck of the woods. On Sydney road, up the hill from Albertsons. They live in the woods too. But I bet my sister is complaining about the heat. Anything over 75 is too hot for her. She hates the heat over here on the eastside.

Sagewood.

Olympia, WA(Zone 8b)

SAGE,
Ummm, "the eastside" is BELLEVUE over here, lol Well for SOME people it is, anyway. Kinda like PIXY that is CONFUSED about the REAL Lakewood, Washington. LOL

People in E. Wash. call the west side of the cascades "coastal". The east side is Bellevue which I am heading to work tomorrow. Look out Bellevue. I can't wait until the nurseries open on saturday! There are so many up zone plants I want to try (kill) here next year.

Olympia, WA(Zone 8b)

SOFE,
Oh SURE, give a person two days notice to make time to come up and see you!! :P

If you need a fix at Bellevue Square I'll be at Bodily Veterinary Hospital right next to Lowes off 520. We can go to Medina nursery and have fun. Steve.
